I am trying to get a network setup on a machine running Win 2000...

I tried to release the IP address in the cmd prompt, but it said it was autoconfigured and couldn't be released. Well I used a windows help suggestion and edited the registry to turn off IP Autoconfiguration...

Now when I go to the command prompt and type ipconfig /renew, it says "an operation was attempted on something that is not a socket"...

What the hell does that mean? Any info would be great!

First thing is your network device showing up properly in the network connections? Make sure it says it has a link or connection to the network. How is your network set up? Do you have a router handing out DHCP or do you need a static IP address?

We have a router handing out DHCP...

My local area connection shows up fine, and doesn't say anything about being disabled....I released the ip address and can't renew it because it gives me that error.
