    Hey guys,

I'm in Italy for a year studying abroad. I have a 2meg ADSL line coming into my apartment and I can't get online no matter how many technicians I've talked to. They've told me that my cable is bad, my ethernet port is broken, my software is screwed up, every excuse. It works for my roommate but not for me. We both have auto ip and auto dns on and mine keeps defaulting to 169.xxx and his has a different ip. His works and mine doesnt. I've tried everything I can think of to try and get an IP that works. The internet company gave me an ip and DNS to try instead of doing auto and it says connected but i dont receive any packets. I know there's a million things that can cause this but I have no idea what do do anymore.

    I have a dell inspiron 600m. broadcom 570x gigabit integrated controller. Pentium M 1.5ghz with 512 ram.

If any more info is needed to help diagnose/solve the problem I'll gladly post anything I can to help. When tech support fails its time to call in majorgeeks. :cool

    I'd try starting here -
    http://www.ezlan.net/debug.html
Getting the 169.254.x.x IP means you are not getting to the modem or router.
Post back if you still have problems and one of the gurus can straighten you out.
    Good Luck.

Thanks for the link. I went through the steps and tried each of them but nothing worked. Last night a friend brought his laptop over and it worked fine on his computer. I plugged the cable into mine and it didnt work. I noticed he had vista and had tcp/ip version 4 and 6. Mine doesn't have a version number but I hit install and installed the protocol for Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 and the internet worked for a few minutes before crapping out again. I tried redoing that but again it doesn't work. What else can I do?

Thanks again for any help! :)

I'm not familiar with ADSL connections.
Just for more information for other members -
    What's your OS?
    Type and model of modem?
    How are you physically connecting?
Can you do an ipconfig /all from the command line and post results?
    (Start > Run > cmd)
This info might point out some problems.
    Good Luck
