i just recently built a new computer for my friend, but there is a small problem-the ip address configuration. first, some explaining: his router is a speedtouch router/modem (545 or something like that), and i cannot find out how to access it through a web browser (to change allowed ip addresses), i tried every ip address i found on the internet for speedtouch modems/routers and nothing works. also, both his new computer and his old computer are running windows XP home edition and both are on a wired connection to the same router/modem.

SO on to the problem: his router only allows a single IP address. i tried using the setting "obtain an ip address automatically" with both computers, also with the set DNS and with it trying to get assigned a DNS. i also tried to change one digit of the ip address, for example if it was 10.10.40.162 (which is the format his real ip address is) i would change it to 10.11.40.162. i also tried changing every other number in the ip address, for example to 11.11.41.162, 11.11.41.164, 11.10.40.162, and so on. the ONLY ip address that works is the one that was on his old computer, and then of course that wont work if i have it set to both because it gets the "same ip on different computers on the same network" error.

    please help!

Seems that his Router keeps an internal routing table.
What I would do is go back to the old computer, bring up the Command Prompt, and type in ipconfig, and get the Default Gateway, from there, throw that up in Internet explorer and try that. If that doesn't work, possibly you may need to cable into the speedtouch using a different method (Mind you i don't even know what one looks like.) From that, once you have the default gateway, and gone into the router. Change the routing tables to allow more IP addresses.

    Best of luck.

hmm...i took what you said into consideration and decided that it would be much easier to just buy a different ethernet router.

can anyone suggest a good ethernet router for under ~$60?

I have three machines through one router. All have the very same IP address EXCEPT for the LAST number. .00,.01,.02.

ok, i just found out that me and my friend have the exact same router, and what you are suggesting doesn't work.

next time im over at his house, I'll try the method that digitalocksmith is proposing, but first i have a question: if i reset the router, that SHOULD allow me to successfully set the configuration to "obtain an IP address automatically" (and have it work), right?

im going to go and try this on my router right now and report back in a minute or two.

ok, i reset my router (i held a pen in it until the first light turned red, and then it booted up and all the lights turned green one by one until internet access was regained), but my IP address that i started out with is the same as before.

is this supposed to happen? or did i do it wrong?

ALSO, would it be possible for me to access my router's settings via a web browser? i have a separate wireless router connected to my wired modem/router (WGR614v9 netgear) and i can do that with it.

ok, i just called him and talked him through resetting his router and setting the "obtain ip address automatically" setting, which he did, and it worked...but only for one computer. He applied the same exact settings to the other computer but it came up with the "limited connectivity" error in the taskbar, and internet pages didnt load, so no internet access.

SO ANYWAYS now were back to square 1...unless someone here knows how to fix this, what i reccomendded for him is to buy a new router and connect that to his current modem/router and connect all of his internet devices to the newer, more configurable router so they can all work at the same time.

(btw, his router model is a speedtouch 546v6)

well, ill text him later and ask him if he could try to set the settings on his xbox360 (which has been having the same IP conflict problems as his computers) to "obtain an IP address automatically" and see if that works.

if THAT doesnt work, then im pretty sure that its a problem with the router.
