    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can help me or at least point me in the right direction ... My computer is on a network with a dynamic ip and i wanted to use the remote desktop feature on XP and ftp. The problem is that when i'm on another computer I can't know the IP of my computer and therefore can't connect. I would like to know what I can do to get around this problem and if there exist a program which cauld be installed on a host computer and return the ip of that computer to a client program/website or something. 10x

If you are on a network, and are connecting, from the internet to do Remote Desktop, its not as easy as just knowing the IP address.

First, you need the public IP address for the WAN side of the network (the side connecting to the net), then you need to setup your router to forward rdp requests on port 3389 to the machine you want to connect to. Then you need to make sure whatever firewalls you are using are going to let the request come through by opening up that port in the firewall settings.

I'm taking the risk of sounding pretty ungeekish ....

Do all routers support port forwarding? And how exactly can I set the router to forward the ports? I'm currently connected to an EDIMAX 10mbps 17 port ethernet hub, 16 port utp + 1 bnc. and I have already set the firewall to accept incoming connections on that port. ah ... and how do I get the ip for the WAN side of the net? does http://www.canyouseeme.org/ do this?

    Thanks! :)

Yup, that site gives you the IP. If thats a plain switch, then it may not be blocking any ports, which may mean you have an edgeless network--a network using public IP addresses. Thats very, very insecure, by the way.

If thats the case, all you need is the IP of the machine. We can clear this up real quick. What IS the IP of the machine? If you don't feel comfortable posting the full IP, in the event its public, then just give use the first 2 sets.

Great! The first two sets are 194.204.x.x

Interesting IP address. Did you assign them manually?

See if you can ping the computer in question from the remote machine by IP address. What are your results?

No I didn't set that ip, I just configured the ones on the network i.e. the 192.168.0.x ones. I'm pinging the remote computer (195.158.x.x) ok but when the other is trying to ping me (194.204.x.x) on the ip i gave you it's getting a request timed out.

Is there a firewall on the other computer too? Request timed out means it sees the computer, but cannot access it due to something blocking it. Port 3389 must be opened on both firewalls.

Both the computers have those ports open ... what can be going wrong?
I'v also had the same kind of trouble when using Azureus but gave up on trying to fix it

Now I just noticed that all of the computers connected to my network are returning the same Public IP address .... can this be arranged or am I doomed? Can specific ports be used by just one computer i.e. mine instead of the whole network? If yes how can this be done? 10x

Can you give me the model number of that Edimax device you are using?

Sorry that took a while as the model number is not printed on the device ... The Edimax is an ER-5397P

Ok, you are IP addresses are not being assigned from that device. For all the computers on the network to have the same public IP, they must have a computer or router assigning them.

We need to find out what that device is.

According to my knowledge, there is no router on the system. And I installed everything on all the computers myself. I think that the Edimax device COULD have a 'router' or something similar on it as on its settings it has an 'IP Route Table' on it and several other features I don't know anything about. I made a complete set of printscreens if they can be helpful.. how can I send them to you Adrynalyne?

I believe you can upload the screen prints by attaching them to a post using the advanced option. To answer one of you questions no you are not doomed. you must have a router from your description. and if you can access it you should be able to assign specific ports to specific IP's. You may have to configure your computers to have fixed IP's instead of using dynamic assignment.

Some newer modems act as a router I believe. Don't some Isp's block ports also?
