I was wondering if anyone might have an answer to a question I have about Remote IPC. One of our branch offices consists of a small 4 maybe 5 computer workgroup. One of these computers is setup as the print server for the rest of the office. (Now this problem is on all of the computers out there or I'd just switch the printer to another PC.) When one computer try's to connect to another computer I receive an error not letting me have access to it's resources. After looking at various possibilities I noticed that IPC$ was missing from the shares. I went to my command prompt and created a new share (Net Share ipc$) everything works great. Everyone can now see each other resources and connect nooooo problem. But when I reboot the pc's the ipc$ disappears and I'm back in the same boat. Does anyone know how to create a permanent ipc$ share? As far I know ipc$ and admin$ are both created by windows and cannot be modified or deleted sooooo I am stuck. Any ideas?

What O/S are they running? Do you have file and print sharing enabled? If you are just running peer to peer did you set up each computer to have the same username and passwords as the rest (authentication purposes)? No firewalls running?

The O/S is windows 2000, yes file and print sharing is enabled...username and passwords are different. When IPC$ is not present and you try to access the print server pc from network places it will prompt for a username and password but no matter what you put in it won't let you in. Once IPC$ is present connecting to the pc is no problem. I did notice if I run the net share command when I first start up the pc IPC$ is present but then moments later is gone. Is there maybe some spyaware or a virus that removes IPC$ and Admin$???

To my knowledge you can delete IPC$, but the Server service creates it again automatically whenever it starts or restarts. Maybe the Server service is on Manual? It should be on Automatic.

Zen have you got a solution to your problem,
I have got the same problem with my win2k pro. I have a small network with 2 win2k pros and one win98. everything was OK that each machine could access others share folders and print using one win2k.
later the other machines could not connect to "printer win2k" machine, but the "printer win2k" can see others ans access.
I have formatted the "printer win2k" and reinstalled OS (win2k pro) again. everything worked fine but yesterday the same problem occured again.
I checked the shares of the "printer win2k" using "NET SHARE". it doesnot show the IPC$, ADMIN$ or C$.
I add the IPC$ by invoking "NET SHARE IPC$". I got the IPC$ back. the other win2k now can access the "printer win2k" but win 98 is asking for the "\\print_win2k\\IPC$" password.
the username and password of the win98 is configured as a user in "printer win2k".
after about 2 minutes of invoking the "NET SHARE IPC$" the IPC$ share was again not there when I see it using "NET SHARE".

now I have created a batch file with line
"NET SHARE IPC$" and execute it every time my other win2k want to print or acccess "printer win2k" and mty win 98 continusly asking for IPC$ password....

Is there any virus or spyware available which does not allow the IPC$ to be up for more than a couple of minutes....

and of course all my machine connect to internet using different dial up connections.(different phone lines)

    I appreciate any help!!!!!!!!!
