    Hi,
I ran a windows update and after the reboot ip networking is not working. ipconfig does not return any information and when I try to disable the lan connection in Network Connections, it hangs. It also hangs when I try to uninstall the network adapter. Also, it hangs when shutting down and I need to power the laptop off manually.
However, it appears networking does work in safe mode, ipconfig returns all of its information and I can ping another device as well.
I ran your suggested virus scan programs, and it did not appear to detect any problems.
This is a Dell Latitude D810 running WinXP with SP3 and a Broadcom NetXtreme network adapter.
Can you give me any help?
    Thanks,
    miami

No, I don't use ZoneAlarm. Only have Etrust Pest Control AV.

I have a relative that just had the same problem on a W7 machine. After trying all the resets/restore defaults, to no avail, I had her due a system restore to a couple of days before the problem. Problem solved, seems to have been some hiccup during an update. She then installed the update again, and all is well.

    Hi,
I tried doing a few restore points which were prior to that win update, which took a while to perform, but it did not correct the problem.

Check for updates to Etrust Pest Control AV and also,

Have you tried, from a command line:

    ipconfig /release

    followed by

    ipconfig /renew

And additionally, reset winsock, again from a command line:

    netsh Winsock reset

    OK, try this:

Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services
Start Windows Zero Configuration Service, DHCP Client, DNS client if they are stopped. Set them to Automatic startup.

Thank you for sticking with me... this did not make a difference. Still no ip assignment.

Does the antivirus have a firewall? is it paid AV? last ditch effort, ya may wanna try reinstalling it. just a suggestion.

another thing, you said its hanging up when you try to uninstall or disable the network, if you can get it to hang again, open taskmanager and see whats hogging up resources. might give a little insight into whats causing the overall problem. don't kill anything in taskmanager, could harm the pc, but it can point you in the right direction.

Thank you for the help. I got it working by resetting TCP/IP following Microsoft's tech support article:
    netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

Do you have a URL for that? Is it anything like what I suggested: netsh Winsock reset ?

I had the same problem but nothing above helped - I found the following resolved my issue and got me back online.

    http://faq.sh/content/3/9/en/fixing-a-blank-ipconfig-output-windows-xp.html

    Resolution
Click the Start button and select Run.
    Enter “cmd” and press “OK”.
Type the command “regsvr32 netshell.dll” and press Enter.
Type “exit” and press Enter to close the shell.
    Open “Network Connections”
Right click on the Interface causing the problems and select “Disable”.
Right click on the Interface causing the problems and select “Enable”.
The network interface should now be operational.
