    Hello,
I looked around couldn't find this addressed so here's hoping it's not a redundant question.

IRC chat programs (such as mIRC) are these a security risk?
    minimize this risk to negligible?
or better to just not use it if your pretty novice computer user?

    thanks,
    Mark

    Hi Mark

IRC is fine for chatting to various user groups, I would though urge caution to downloading anything thats offered if you dont personally know the group very well.

Question is as you mention novice, is why you want to use IRC?
Personally I dont these days as most if not all my contacts use Messenger or we email( also use Palringo), IRC well is not the prefered medium, may have been many years back and many now cling to it thinking they are l33t h4k0r5.

I haven't used IRC in years! It was really an 'anything goes' type of medium in which I got sick at what some of the groups 'specialized in'. Even being in tech oriented channels, it was a free for all for kiddies IMO. There were some sane channels but I still cringed reading some of that crap while waiting for someone to package up a new release of Longhorn. Haven't been back since as I have no reason to.

I remember dial up coming out and that movie "hackers" love that movie, "hack the gibson". I still haven't figured out how to make fire sprinklers run a "test" through the internet, but i am not *** cool as "Zerocool", dont try and tell me you dont love that movie. lol anyways

It's a little cheezy but there is a "daytrader" group that uses mIRC that i want to follow
(and here i move more into "off topic" than "software")
I am trying to learn more about that stuff there is A LOT of Jargon that gets thrown around and I find best way to learn jargon is to see people use it frequently.
just starting in college, headed toward economics so this is an area i started getting interested in.

OK, since you know where you want to go and what you want to learn, the mIRC is just fine. Just make sure your your protection is up to date and follow Halo's concerns. Daytraders using IRC?? They could use any format they wanted, like an MSN or Google group etc. Doing this on IRC raises my scam hackles.;) Sounds more like a 'secret society'.:-D
