    In Irfanview
is there a quick way to down size pictures to an suitable size for email attaching
all my images are to big full page 200 x 1500 so if I can speed the process it would be great

i know clicking on Image menu - then resize /resample will alow simple resizing bvut then what do I do to put it in email as attachment? also , I have noticed when I drag an image to set in email as attachment it frequently end up copied into the text of the letter as well , how do i control this ?
Is there an accepted size desired as email attachmetnt ?

I convert mine when I save the image. In the dialogue box you have a number of choices of file associations.

If a picture is too big for an attachment, I resize it to the size that I want to send, then: click File>save as>rename picture. This will allow you to have youe original picture in its original size and another (that you renamed) as the size to e-mail. To attach in OE (which is what I use) I open a new e-mail, hit the attach, navigate to the renamed picture, and chose "attach".

.I have never heard of jpegs automatically resizing for e-mail purposes. I have always had to resize them, unless I am doing something wrong.

very thorough answer , thanksa guy ! Now what is the coreect size for email.attached pics? is the only way to tell if it is too big , to just go ahead and send and see if it comes back as undeliverable?

You are not doing anything wrong with jpeg , I just heard rumor jpeg that they are more inclined to to succed in email attachement than bit map - but that is obvious i suppose you know anything about plugins for irfan to allow diret sending resizing from with irfan ?

You can send any size picture that you want; the problem lies with the receiving ISP and their size restrictions I think. I tried to send two small pictures to a hotmail account and they were returned because of mailbox size restrictions. Also, a large picture can be a huge download for someone on dial-up.

I like jpeg simply because IMHO they compress or downsize better and hold more of the original quality than bitmap or other file types. Many will argue this point, jpeg is simply my preference. I try to not exceed about 400k when e-mailing pix.
Alas I am sorry to say that i know nothing about plug-ins for direct sending within IrfanView. I've used photoshop for years, but have been playing around with irfanView lately. Haven't done that yet. I would suggest that you go to their site and go to some of the links. Also, while looking for a forum for you on Google there were quite a few sites that offered tutorials on IrfanView. Google it and see what comes up. I just put "IrfanView" in the search box and got a lot of hits, unfortunately no forums. I could not find any newsgroups either on Usenet:( bummer...

XP can when you right click an image and choose "send to" > "Mail Recipient" popup a box which gives you a few options to make the picture smaller and a "show more options" so to choose your size to send, small size = 640 x 480 and once you click ok it will resize and open OE and attach your picture automatically ( it also does this if you select multiple pictures )

It however wont convert BMPs to Jpegs you will have to open with IfanView or other GFX program and as Boccemon said choose save as and pick jpeg, jpg from the drop down menu.

A good size for mailing is 640-480. Don't forget you can grab any portion of the picture with your mouse, then resize that portion only, if you like. Save it, then mail it, rather than a whole picture. Such as... you can crop the picture as to save a headshot only, from a mob of people. Unlimited options with this Iview, as I call it. No BPP doesn't mean bmp. George.
