Is a PSU considered "hazardous waste"?

I have an ancient (more than ten years old) power supply that just died on me a couple days ago. I want to throw it away, but I know that some electronic devices are considered hazardous waste (CRT monitors, etc.) so I'm just making sure that I can just throw this PSU away instead of going through the trouble of giving it to some service.

 

I'm not a good recycler but the proper thing to do is take to a disposal site that handles electronics, batteries etc. I'm sure there are small amounts of chemicals that are not good for the environment. It looks like European Union is requiring that manufacturer's now put a not safe for normal trash symbol on newer units. There is aparagraph about it in this review.

 

Yes they contain lead and various other heavy metals such as murcury and cadmium which can seep into the water supply and contaminate it.

Yup the electronics bay at the local dump is where they belong,at least that's where they go over here.

Metal and especially lead has become so valuable now that most of it is removed from regular household waste and recycled so you don't have to worry too much if you want to throw it in your domestic waste it will be filtered out and recycled.

Right now a penny over here is actually worth its weight in copper,we threw an old extension lead away and got £2.50,we got £4.00 for stainless steel kitchen sink,so if you want to make some money collect all your waste metal including your power supply and take it to a metal weigh in yard.
