Is AC1750 Dual Band Gigabit Router needed?

We have 3 PCs, 1 laptop, 1 tablet, I don't know how many game consoles (I think 3, but could be 4) that use wifi in our 1500sqft split-level home. Our Vizio TV (located upstairs) wifi connection was horrid with our NETGEAR Wireless Router - (WNDR3700)N600 Dual Band Gigabit (located downstairs) so we got a HooToo extender, which helped only slightly with the wifi, but made a big difference when we plugged into the ethernet port of the HooToo (located upstairs).

Now we're getting another "smart" TV. Ugh. The guy at Costco told us today we need to upgrade our router to a AC1750 router since we're already having probs with the original "smart" TV.

Would getting a new router really help that much or should we just look at an AC1750 extender? Or would that do no good since our current router isn't an "AC1750" - whatever that means...

I trust everyone here more than a salesman....what say you all? :confused

Thanks Oldphil! ...but as to the link, I didn't find anything about what we're looking for. But since you're asking (?), we do run a guest account (separate from our computers), we don't broadcast our SSIDs, and we use WPA2-PSK passwords that we change ever 3 weeks or so...so can you please elaborate? Are you saying we're not "safe" enough...still? And any thoughts on the original question?

If you get time do a little reading, some fixes are coming out but they are still problematic.

Look at the reviews at smallnetbuilder.com. If you plan on streaming 1080p/24 movies from a NAS. Stick with Wired. AC is good for if you have a fat enough pipe (ie Google Fiber). Other wise it is just overkill in most cases.

If you have problems with coverage. I suggest going with POE capable A/P's. Preferably the ones that look like Smoke Detectors, that you can place high on a wall or on a ceiling.
