I'd like to go into the field of software development/programming. does anyone here currently work in that field?

i was just wondering a few things...

-what company do u work for?
-what kind of salary r u working on?
-what kind of tasks do u perform?

    thanks! :)

I work for a small consulting company that pretty much finds the people needed to do many jobs. I am the companies first full time employee.

I dont make much because of my age and I dont have a degree yet but I see ads on job search sites that average about 70,000 for C developers.

    http://www.calmis.cahwnet.gov/file/occguide/COMPUPRO.HTM

    thats for california averages, 68,000

Its kind of random, our work has a JAVA programmer with 30 years exp who is making 150,000 / Year at Ford. Depends on your skill and who you know.

Usually with programming I go over a software program a company will need, decide what the best language to use it and figure out how long I think it will take. THen I start developing it and depending what type of program it is I test it on site or in the office. Usually long hours of staring at text and having bloodshot eyes when you get home. Feels good when you get everything working tho.

I'd say I am a software developer, but I'm mainly a web-software developer. Me and my partner (we own a business together) write CMSes for people, as well as custom web applications.

BUT we're just starting out, and we get paid as much as you would to make a website, so probably not the same thing! :)

Yeah theres also many different types of sftware, web pages, GUI, Terminal, phone software and many others. All differnt pay i'm sure and much different work.

My work is mostly Windows GUI files and ASP programs for websites (my biggest being a job search database, working on a intranet right now)

how difficult is it to find a job in this field these days?

I'm also worried about going into this field b/c i always hear about how these kinda people get laid off A LOT. is that true?

I haven't been able to find a job yet for programming. As a result, I started my own business with another programmer friend of mine. If you ask me, programming jobs in the USA are far and few between and those that are availabe want requirements that are hard to meet. They want 15+ languages with solid knowlege. I'm sure some people have this, but it can't be easy to acquire. If you're lucky to find one, make sure you keep it.

I don't want to discourage you, but a result like what I posted has been the typical job posting that I've come across for sotware development. It makes my are pucker every time I read one of those.
