I pretty much listen to anything recorded in the 60's and 70's and I've never touched an illegal drug in my life. I think I'm doing pretty ok. :)

I love music, just about all genres especially rock n roll. Since I was kid I've always been against drugs and alcohol because it destroys lives everyday. I could go on and on about this subject but personally I think drugs is a secret way to let satan in your soul and eventually take you over and kill you.

I believe if rock stars are going to get paid millions they should be drug free. They should be tested for drugs by their record companies and if positive.."paycut or no deal" because it's not fair to the ones who never touch the stuff and struggle everyday. Not only is it not fair to the ones who never touch it, it's not fair to others because a lot of people including our kids look up to musicians as their idols and what good is it for our so called "heroes" to be dope heads?

While I agree with you on many of the points you made. I can't help but imagine that the music of the legends like Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison would never have been what it was if it were not for drugs.

Yes the two are seperable. For example, there are many Christian rock bands out there, who don't do drugs and some of the music is just awesome. My husband was the bass player of such a band for many years - he's never done an illegal drug in his life. Musicians are extremely creative artists, and it is a skill and a blessing. To suggest they were only as great as they were/are because of their illicit drug-taking for those who did, is an insult to their unique talent IMHO :)

    seems like there's quite a R'n'R community here :).
Yeah anyone can enjoy Rock without taking any drugs but as other guys said big Rock 'n' Roll stars, even more Metal stars, usually do. How can 60 y old men stay on stage for 5 hours?!

You make some good points but you do realize that the majority of the record companies are the ones pushing the drugs on the musicians right?

hey BluesMan, your avatar seems a little "high".:D
one thing leads to another. Singers know that with drugs they're gonna perform better in a live concert and companies like to sign contracts with such performers. It's something like an unwriten law...

It seems that the gene for “Artistic Creativity” is tied to the area of the brain that is most affected by Drug & Alcohol use and abuse. The how and why of this is still a strongly debated issue among those studying it. Historically if you look at most “Famous Artist’s”, you will find that they at sometime in their careers, have had to deal with this issue.

To place the debate on a moral or spiritual plane does nothing to address the underlying issues, in fact it hinders the research being done.

My own moral guidelines are against any substance abuse; however I have witnessed first hand the affects these abuses have had in enhancing the “Creativity” of certain individuals. Would they have been as “Creative” without the Drugs/Alcohol that I can not honestly say? Did their abuse of Drugs/Alcohol affect other aspects of their lives in a negative way, Yes. Can or should we enact legislation to stop this abuse, and thus deprive society of their talents? Well again historically, it has been proven that this in the least is ineffectual, and in the worst cases a detriment to human freedom. I for one would find this world a lot worse without their “Artistic” gift to us all, but would not wish to pay the price that so many of them have.

It was a saying that emerged in the 60's, the drug and sexual revaluation. Kinda like Leary's expression, "turn on, tune in and drop out" related to LSD.
Most of the old timers who are still around are amazed they are still around. Joe Walsh from the Eagles said everyone he partied with are dead.
There are people who believe they can't preform without being high.
Plus everything sounds like a good idea when your buzzed, until later.

Well, I don't care if the rock musicians I listen to do drugs or not. Still if your interested in hearing some really awesome music which rallies against drugs check out the early recordings by the original Modern Lovers. They were around from about '73 - '77 and cranked out some of the greatest rock 'n roll of all time. In an age where everybody was celebrating excess, wearing bell bottoms, and growing their hair long. Their songwriter/ lead guitarist/ and singer (Jonathan Richman) dressed conservitly, had short hair and sang about being drug free, eating heath food, going to museums, being monogamous, having respect for old people, etc. Amazingly enough he did this with out sounding the slightest bit corny or preachy. Funny side note, he is also the guy who shows up playing the guitar in various scenes in the movie "there's something about mary"

In my opinion most of, what i consider, the best songs ever were written by artists who were on drugs at the time they wrote it. I don't think you have to do drugs to make a good rock song, but it has proven effective over the years. Especially in the rap genre of music.lol

The music business has been a stranglehold on creativity,to get a record published or on the radio you needed 1-2 guys who owned the record company to like your music, now with the internet people can buy what they like instead of what the few record company guys think you will like

I think we'll begin to a see alot of great music from places we never imagined and the bands that rise to the top will be the ones who create the best music, not the guys who hang around a studio all day getting Hi and living the rock and roll life. :)

Ya, I grew up in those days and it was sad to see Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison etc die from excess but these seem to me to have been troubled people to start with. Just listen to their music. It was very sad with Hendrix for me as he was supposed to do an album with Miles Davis before his demise. There were also many jazz people that also succumbed from heroin related issues.

Just to get back on topic, yes they are separable IMHO. Talent will always rise to the top.

I know several people who are artistic one way or another. Most of them smoke pot. All the musicians I know under the age of fifty smoke pot. I put the age in there because my Dad and his friends play in various wind instrument bands. None of them smoke...I have to wonder how different they'd sound, and how much more they would get into their music. Another friend, an amazing guitar player, who smokes weed regularly, got into smoking crack for a few weeks. They would all get high, then play bluegrass. "The most incredible jam sessions ever" he told me. He gave up the crack because he was fully aware of the destructive nature of drugs like that, but had to leave all those guys behind because when he met up with them he said the crack smell on them was overwhelming and he would feel the urge.
