   I believe that a Live account on Windows is free. They don't charge you the way they do on the XBox 360.

   Yes you get a basic account (mine is Sliver) that allows you online gameplay, I signed up to this with Shadowrun for PC, so expect Halo2 to be the same, you can upgrade to Gold accound if you wish but this costs.
