im looking at buying an intel quad core 2.66GHZ processor, intel motherboard, and 8 gigs of intel DDR3 Ram. these items would cost me about 616$
what i want to know it intel the way to go or should i take a different route?
also the CPU comes with out a fan and i could get a intel quad 2.5 Ghz with a fan and save about 40$ but if i were gaming would that affect FPS?

    Hi

Intel is not bad! They are a little bit more expensive than their AMD counterparts, so I would advise also pricing up the equivilent AMD setup in motherboard and CPU. However loosing all of .16 ghz is not going to affect FPS in any way your eye would notice as the GPU in your graphic card is the main component that handles FPS in games.

The quad 2.5ghz will be fine.

I have built a PC based on Intel components and am well satisfied with the result.
The only thing i can suggest is that you go that little bit further and get the best GPU you can afford as gaming is all about graphics.
It may seem expensive at first but you will reap the dividends when running heavy graphics, I am folding 24/7 with mine and it generates a lot of heat so good cooling is essential.
Just as an after thought Intel does seem to me to handle the higher temperatures better ( i have recorded 102 on my GPU without any loss in performance)

    wouldn't it be 2.66 x 4 = 12.64? (an extra 2.64Ghz)and the other be a 10 ghz

Actually, Halo was comparing a 2.66ghz Intel to a 2.50ghz AMD. The difference being .16ghz.

Here's the Thread for you Shane. Its a poll, which is tilted towards AMD by one vote, most voters have left their opinions and reasoning's behind. Take a look.

    Hi Gamemaniac welcome to MGs.

I like intel and have 2 high end machines (1 is a new build) both on Intel products and am very happy with both and the next project is to build an i7 based machine.
I think Intel like MS have a lot of bad press just because they are the market leaders and as we know people love to build you up and then take great delight in bringing you down.

I think you need to look at the thread link I posted.

I agree with you and polls and arguments on Intel vs AMD are futile and will never be resolved, horses for courses and you takes your chance and choice, its a personal thing and who ever says one is worse that the other, has no clue.

*BTW I normally run Intel CPU and Mobos but do have PCs in the house with AMD, so dont really care a CPU is a CPU, costs also fluctuate in the tech market and some CPUs no matter the make can be more expensive per country.

factor in overclocking and the AMD will be faster there chips clock well

Not these days, most of the top OCs are using Intel CPUs, this list is current from some of the teams that OC on regular basis, also only also have to look at FutureMarks benchmark lists and majority of the top scores are from Intel CPU based PCs.

Would say $$££ vs OC achievable to us mear mortals is that AMD would be more cost effective, solution, but many although they using LN2 etc do use the cheaper Celerons, although LN2 is not for all bar the determined OCer.

yes but thats Competition [ thats because intel sponsors most of them ] for your avrg power user the amds clock great and are cheap [ less cost if you do blow a chip up]

my crica 2007 5000+ does 3.2 on air and I know the NEW phoenom [AM3] can get to 4.x with a quality air cooler .. but its best to water cool them at those speeds tho
