I started my xp on my laptop(athlon xp 3000, acer aspire) and after a few minutes it shutdowns randomly, recently its been doing this whenever I try to watch movies or convert avi files into other video types using another program. This last time before I go shutdown I opened task manager and saw Monitor.exe at 99 to 92 back to 99 percent of my cpu with everything at about 2percent. This is a fairly new problem for me. I am interested in knowing can that program be shutdown without it messing up my laptop.

Also, when my system overheats and shutsdown part of the fan that shoots out hot air is cold while the rest is hot, someone told me my internal fans might not be working right or could be dirty with dust.

Is there anyway I can troubleshoot before I take it to the shop?

You might try cleaning your vents with a can of compressed air that you can get at computer shops. Make sure you spray for a few seconds away from your PC in case there is any moisture in the can.

When it blows clear then try it on your PC. I'd hold it away from your PC vents at first. Not directly poke it into the vent, until you can judge the pressure and effect.

Also check when you use your laptop that the vent is clear to suck in air.
Not resting on fabric that may stop air from entering.

You might also try lifting your laptop a bit higher by placing something solid at the back of your laptop to elevate it a bit, if your inlet vent is underneath. Bazza

Thanks, I will try that usually i have it on my lap with the battery on my knee, I'll try the vent cleaning and I was told to check my heatsink also? I'll take it to the shop and let them clean it up but the canned air i can do....

    thank you all.

A true " laptop user" :D Not many around.;)
Use it at a desk, if you have room, a lot easier. Bazza

question, doesnt a desk block off the vents? my laptop has like 3 at the bottom....but a desk is a good idea i'm so comfortable without it but if it will help stop the random shutdowns i'm game.

With a stick or aerosol can of water soluable fabric adhesive, you can temporarily afix 4 water bottle screw caps to the bottom of your laptop. The clearance you gain isn't high enough to cause arm strain but the bottom vents will get better airflow and a cooler running laptop.:)
