I downloaded XP sp 2 and now my computer won't let me log on. I did the restart after install and it comes back up tot he first blue screen tht shows windows xp and then goes no further. I let it run all night and it still never got to the logon screen. Anyone else have troubles with this? Wife is pissed now!

I'm pretty sure it's not a virus. The things I've read here mention problems like this and sometimes you have to uninstall the SP2 and do a few other stepas and then reinstall.

    But...first...

You didn't mention any error messages but just want to be sure.

It just started to boot up and stop here with no error messages? Stop messages? etc.

Correct, I just re-booted and it started to re-boot but it just stops and never goes any further. It doesn't even get to the screen that will let me log on to the computer.

I had the same problem, installed SP2 and can not reboot computer. I ended up doing a recovery on my HP computer which put it back to original. I then tried to reinstall SP2 and had the same problem. Recovered system again and tried to install SP1 and still had the same problem. The computer had SP1 running fine prior to installing SP2.
I am now just running XP with no service packs.
Anyone have a clue what's up????

Well, if you want to give it a try, you can uninstall SP2 then try re-installing it again.

There are specific steps to take in both uninstalling and installing:

    Uninstalling:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=875350

How to help protect your computer if you decide to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2

    Re-installing:

Detailed Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation walkthrough
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=875364&product=windowsxpsp2

I don't know what you did to "prepare" your computer before the download (i.e. make sure non-Microsoft products are up-to-date and have any patches for SP2), etc. Another MG member sent me a detailed list of ideas and things to look for (I can send it to you if you want to PM me)

    In it he says:
Have you tried rebooting it more than once?

I have tried rebooting it 50 times and it goes nowhere. I left the computer turned on for 24 straight hours thinking maybe it would just eventually boot up and still nothing. The black windows xp screen scrolls about 15 times then a blue screen finally pops up but goes no further. Never gets tothe log on screen. I always keep everything updated and thats what frustrates me about this update now.

OK thats one of my theores outa the window .
lets look at like this: there seems to be a compatiility isssue with sp2 and your machines i know there was a list produced by MS stating there could be problems with particular programs
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130
and if any of these are in registry as start up programs that could be something
and ive also heard that sp2 wont load onto pirate copies of xp ??
    http://www.********.com/article/1084264398

im a bit confused as to why LLHP cant install sp1 as previous
1 (how far do you get )
2 (are you downloadig it from web or copying from CD)
have you tried the procedure pegg gave as if SP2 is uninstalled correctly your system should be put back to original state .

I am using to XP that came with my Dell computer and it is not a pirate. I am replying from my work computer because I am completely locked out of my home computer. I tried to restart with my widows xp cd in the drive and I still can not get to the log in screen to do anything.

Can I hook it up to my work laptop computer to do this?

    OK
Sorry about the delay i was in work when i last posted but im home now and all is quiet.
i presume you've tried safe mode and recovery disk yes.
    right to work
firstly the last thing you ever want to do is a reinstall of your OS we all spend plenty of time getting it just as we want and all of us have data that sometimes just cant be lost, there are many ways of recovering data/files before you have to do the inevitable and reinstall an OS but this is a last resort.
ok speech over firstly disconnect all your peripherals, then
what you need to do is a repair install ,this will repair your xp set up to its original state.
firstly you need to change the BIOS to boot from your CD DRIVE
then reboot with your XP CD in it, youll get a message saying press any key to boot from CD press spacebar, then you get a message "set up is inspecting your hardware configuration" then youll get a blue screen press enter and youll see welcome to set up press esc to go on, DONT PRESS R this will start recovery console, next you'll see the windows licence agreement press F8 ,then you'll see your OS( windows XP home/proffesinol) select it and go to next screen then you'll have the option to repair the selected windows OS then press R and it will begin, just respond to the prompts and its a good idea to accept the default settings it offers, when its finished after a couple of reboots you should see your original desktop with all your shortcuts on, then reboot to BIOS and change to boot from original boot setting before you changed it over, then reconnect your perpherals and load drivers for them
    good luck http://images/icons/icon14.gif

Brent, probably easier toi use a friend's desktop PC rather than try and use your work laptop.

Remember to set the drive to a slave. Jumper settings are usually shown on the drive case to set it to a slave, then backup all the stuff you want to save to CD's, DVD's, or floppies as the last resort. Keep us informed. Bazza

Before pulling the drive out, see if you can boot in Safe Mode. Tap the F8 key repeatedly during the reboot and you should get a black & white text screen offering you start-up options. Choose Safe Mode and hit Enter. If you can get Safe Mode running, you can go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall SP2. That SHOULD return you to where you were before the update. You can then do some research on any known incompatibilities with your system, and possibly give it another try later.

There are articles on best way to prepare for the update, including disabling ALL running programs through MSCONFIG before installing SP2. Nose around the Software section here; lots has been posted about it.

i tried to reinstall sp1 and sp2 after a recovery and neither sp's will reboot to windows. i don't even get to the start up screen, just a black screen that does nothing. will not go into safe mode or restore to a prior configuation. both sp's were all down loaded from windows update. i have a sp1 cd and i ordered a sp2 cd but i am tired of reinstalling and resetting everything on my computer. i am now just running xp with updates.

seeing as though you have no service packs on your pc now ditto this to sp1 as well .also
before begining this ,remove all traces of either service pack with add/remove programs and or
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4191

then run a registry cleaner to be sure all trace are gone
this is a easy one to work with
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html

make a back up though in case of problems
let me know how you get on

I can use my sisters computer to move the hard drive for file recovery.

I don't know how I can change the bios?

Tried starting in safe mode and it didn't let me. The blue screen that came up looked like safe mode (size of pointer and letters) but nothing happened.

If I install a new hard drive into my computer making it the main HD and reinstall xp onto it, will I be able to get the files and stuff off of the old one by making it the slave? I have been going to do this for some time anyway and it would make file transfer easier as well as give me a storage drive for all pictures files and other things I don't want on my main drive.

  19. simonk

    simonk Corporal

yes you can do it like that

  20. Brent Nelson

    Brent Nelson Private E-2

OK, I installed the new drive last night and formatted it and installed the windows xp home onto it and it is working. After I hook the original drive back up in order to pull of my files, pictures, etc., will the operating system that is still on the old drive interfere with anything since it will be set as a slave drive?

  21. simonk

    simonk Corporal

No everthing will be ok :)
as long as its set as slave and your new drives up and running as master you can accsses and copy the files over.when youve finsished taking off your data you could reformat it and load xp back on to it then check to see its working fine if so you can then use it if your other drive every breaks down and swap them back over.

Because there was three of us on the old xp and we were password protected, I can't get into any of the user information on the old drive. What now?

  23. Brent Nelson

    Brent Nelson Private E-2

Just tried safe mode and it still won't go to the log in screen. As I stated before, since we had passwords on our accounts, I can't access any of those files from the new hard drive (access is denied).
