Is it dead?!!

I wonder if anyone can help.

My home computer has suddenly started behaving really oddly. When it is turned on and reaches the passwork and then desktop screens it turns to a 16bit large icon screen. It will not recognise the mouse and fails to run system restore. You can operate the computer although I am using it through keyboard only and the screen change makes it difficult to use. It will not respond to a change of display settings either. I am running on Windows ME. The computer is a Mesh and is about 5 years old.

Any ideas? Unfortuanately I am not that computer savvy, it may be a simple answer or it may be the end?

Your computer is pretty old. Not that much people uses windows ME. If you had ever overclocked, installed anything, etc. on your computer, mabye the computer don't support those things.

 

I wonder this question every day...I have to say, the Pc I am using tonight as I type is a 266 pentium( 4mb 3d, 16 sound 3.8 gig HD) It's a Toshiba Tecra 550 CDT. this thing is so old....
Funny it still runs great! 10 years old, never turned off, and runs better and faster than a 500 P2(xcludingGFX)

I haven't installed anything new for at least a year. This has been a sudden problem. The computer has always had its moments of random madness, but I cannot seems to get it out of this particular sulk!

I have right clicked on My computer and this is the following info:

Memory: 256 RAM
System Resources: 12% Free
File System: 32bit
Virtual Memory: 32bit
Disk Compression: Not Installed
PC Cards (PCMCIA) No PC Card Sockets are installed
AMD Athlon(tm) Processor

I am not sure if this helps?
I realise it is difficult to guess the problem when the machine is not in front of you.

Any ideas would be great
