Is it just too slow?

My old Sony (ICK!) computer is truly a slug, but it does most of what I need.
Itis a PIII-800, 512mb, 128 video, XP with latest attempts to make it secure. I also use Antivir, Spybot and AdAware
Some video just won't play correctly. Namely Youtube. Jumping picture, freeze frame, non-synchronous sound, the usual.
And I haven't even tried Netflix streaming because I don't have a box for that yet.
Is this thing just plain too slow for the newest stuff? I don't use it for games.
What is the minimum I need considering I don't expect to be alive this time next year.
Rhino Guy, tough old B'tard with failing heart, liver, lungs and kidneys and a prewar Cadillac that is slower than me and my stuff.

Welcome to MG Rhinoguy:wave Are you on a DUN (dial-up connection) or a hi-speed one? Most DUN's won't play U-tube videos, as the connection is too S-L-O-W, so if you are on a DUN, you are not alone in the video dept. Welcome to the club.

If you are on a hi-speed one, then that is another question for one who is more versed in that area.. Me, I am a DUN....rolleyes

That much I do know, and someone else will be along with more info for you. Have a look around, and you might even find some good info you can use.;)

    Welcome to Majorgeeks :),

XP with SP3 is much heavier on resources than previous versions.

How about trying one of the Linux distros, they may be able to breath some life back into it.

    Welcome! :)

When was the last time you did a format and complete reload of XP? If it has been several years you would see at least a temporary increase in speed from a fresh install.

DSL speed (claimed by speedtest.net) is 1.6M download. I have never re-installed XP because the machine came with no disks (RIP CompUSA).
I can't add more RAM, dang it. Nowhere to put it! Video on MB. Time to pitch the machine, after I get all my Pictures off the hard drive.
I will probably buy a used machine from Intrex, they REALLY stand by their gear.

I have visited this site many times and never posted, but I must say I have found LOTS of real help here reading old posts. And some of the WOT videos are hysterical!

    Thanks folks!
