Is it my mouse or something else??

Hi. I was told in the Malware forum (after getting clean log report) that a situation I'm having is not normal.

Here's the deal. I have a Targus wireless (optical) mouse for my Laptop. (Love having a separate mouse instead of the touch pad!) (If need model #, I'd be happy to provide.)

Anyway I'd be sitting on a page, either typing or just reading & the page would jump up (or down) a few lines (after a few moments of not moving the mouse)... (just happened as I was typing this!!!)... as if the mouse scroll was settling in, so to speak. (Kind of like when you park your car & you let off the brake it settles back just a little more.)

So... is that a problem with the mouse or something else? As I said, my Malware logs are clean now. It's been happening since I started using the mouse. & If I remember correctly it was happening even with a wired mouse.

(I guess I could try to unplug it & use the touch pad for a while to see if it still does it. Never thought of that.) :-o LOL

In the meantime... any suggestions.. & does this happen to anyone else
    :confused

Is the laptop by any chance a Dell?

Also, have you tried disabling your touchpad, after setting up your wired mouse?

    Just an idea.

I'd say it is a mouse problem. I've owned three laptops and all had wireless mice attached: two different models of logitech and a benq. I have never experienced what you are.

All the above are pretty much right-on. You can pick up a new generic wired USB mouse for under $10 at any PC store, or a used one for $3 or less (even .50 at a thrift store) just to see, but I'd be willing to say that it's the mouse. I've used dozens of mice on laptops -wired and wireless- and NEVER had anything like what you're describing, especially not after disabling the touch pad.

    Nope, it's a Toshiba.

I didn't think of that... uh... is it easy to re-enable if something were to happen to my mouse? (for instance using keyboard to get to the desired window?)

Oh... it's a wireLESS mouse, does that make a difference? I take not, since someone else said they've had both & not had the same problem.

Was just thinking that possibly your touch pad mouse is still enabled, and because of it, it maybe making those movements by itself while conflicting with the wireless Mouse. I really don't know, just a thought. Cause I know my dell at home has that issue.

have you made sure it isn't the port. (ex. anything in it, or the plastic beat up)

try a solid color under the mouse.

This is a newer laptop & mouse. I take really good care of it... & I guess I should have mentioned it's been doing this ever since I started using the mouse....

Do you mean the mouse pad? Yes, I have a solid black mouse pad. (Can't find an all white one (with wrist support... cheap enough)... but I don't believe that has anything to do with it.

I really think the others are right, that I need to disable my touch pad. I am waiting to see if anyone will let me know how I can re-enable it, if I am ever in need & my mouse is not working... Once I know that... Then I'll disable the touch pad to see if that solves my problem.

The above suggestions seem spot on, but if that fails:
    1) try another browser
    2) make your browser full screen
    3) disable flash in your browser
    4) list what sites this happens in, or is it all sites?
    5) play around in Word and PDF's and see if they jump

I am thinking if it is not the mouse, what to test next.

It does not matter if I'm in a browser, notepad, Word, PDF or anything... it still jumps. Yep, all sites.

On one notebook, I had to disable the touchpad in the BIOS and I also had a key combo to use while I was working.
On another, I have a lighted toggle switch above the keypad that I just click. You need to read your manual to find out what works on your laptop since each one is different.

Reading this thread I have never been quite sure how random he problem is, or if it happens with another non wireless mouse. Aslo does it happen at other locations?

I asked about Dell because this is a known problem with certain Dell laptops, particularly those with a 'mousepeg' in the keyboard.

I also wondered if there was wireless interference as the wirelss mouse uses the same frequency as many other devices.
