Where is the noise coming from? Your monitor? Your computer's PSU? A fan? A hard drive?

Some noises don't signify very much. Others are bad news. It depends on what causes the noise. To figure that out, we need a little information about what part of your system it's coming from.

Sounds like a hard drive to me. Backup your data and invest in a new one.

It could be the hard drive -- or perhaps it's the monitor. CRTs sometimes whine if the display settings on the computer are not right. It could mean that the monitor is being driven at a refresh rate that will eventually burn it up.

marioman68 -- is the sound coming from the processor box or the display unit? What kind of display are you using?

And try to narrow down the source of the noise as much as you can. The help you get isn't going to be any better than the information we have to work with.

While you're checking for the source of the sound, you could make sure it's not a fan. You may need to open the case. To check, just touch the hub of the fan at the center with the eraser end of a wooden pencil. Apply just enough pressure to slow the fan down a little. If the noise changes pitch, you've found the source of the noise.

If a fan gets noisy, best replace it. It can be a sign of bearing trouble. If so, the bearing will eventually seize, and the fan will stop. Then, your computer may overheat, with consequent damage to the CPU or PSU or other parts.

If you think it's the hard drive, just unplug its power connector. The system probably won't boot and the POST will likely complain of a hard drive controller failure -- but if that hard drive is the source of the noise, the noise will be absent. If the noise re-appears when you re-connect power to the hard drive, you've confirmed it as the source.

BTW -- shut down the computer before disconnecting or re-connecting cables inside the case.
