It would be nice to get dialup on a pda, especially if it was a free dialup number. I currently have pocketpc smartphone with win. mobile 5.0

I think so, it has an option to ad a new modem connection:

The options I have are new cellular line, cellular line gprs, generic IrDa, hayes compatipble on com1, and bluetooth.

im not sure if there is actually somewhere to plug a phone line into it though. you probably can get a wireless service like you do on a phone though. might want to give the store you bough it from a call to be sure.

I can get a connection, but I can't keep it. It says there is no modem sound or something.

Socalfree.net says they have provided free dialup since 1988. They do it b/c they want to "stick it to the man". I think I can't get a connection, not even standard dialup att/cingular number because they want you to use gprs and spend money.
