Is it possible to lock a drive letter to a removable disk?

    Hi

    Windows 7 x64 Ultimate SP1.

I have a laptop that I plug/unplug several removal disks from (USB hard drives, USB memory sticks, etc.).

Windows uses whatever drive letters it wants each time for each device.

That's not a big deal for most of them. However, one particular drive has things on it that programs need to be able to find when it's plugged in, so it needs to use the same drive letter each time.

Is there a way to permanently assign a drive letter to it? Computer Management/Disk Management lets me assign the correct drive letter to the drive, but that setting doesn't "save" after the drive has been unplugged and reconnected later.

I know there should be a way to do it, since computers identify each USB device via a unique ID. I'd just like to know if there's a practical way to force Windows to use the same drive letter for this drive each time without having to manually change it.

Yes it is... I have two portable drives that are locked in to "m" and "n" through Computer Management. Change the hard drive letters that are allocated to whatever you wish through Comp Management.

    Hi mcsmc,
The way I do it is:-
IMPORTANT Make sure you are logged in as an Administrator
Make sure the USB drive you want to change is plugged in and detected (I check in My Computer)
    Open control panel
    Open Administrative Tools
    Open computer management
Under the folder Storage double click on Disk Management and wait until all the drives have been detected.
Find the USB HDD you want to change in the list on the right
Right click on the drive and select "change drive letters and paths"
A window opens up with the drive letter and at the bottom three buttons marked add, change and remove
Click on change and another window will open
Type in the drive letter you want or select from the drop down box
Click OK then exit from Admin Tools and then I reboot to make sure it has worked

So far always worked for me...... as he touches some wood;)

    Hope this helps :wave

I did read your post and I assumed that you knew how to use Computer management. Joffa has replied exactly as I would have. When I first connected my drive it was assigned M. Using Joffas method I made M permanent and it has remained so, whether this works with memory sticks or not I cannot be sure.
