Hello good people and Happy Holidays.to the subject/title/topic.is it possible that commands set/typed in Run can be disabled?reason for asking is I went to look at my last restore point(hang in there I am getting to the beef) only to find system restore does not work.looked at the config in my computer all looks well.i.e.it''s supposed to be alright, anyway upon looking futher found out MSCONFIG in Run does not work either but REGEDIT does.I do now after downloading a tool can access msconfig.question is what happened and how can I fix it if possible without going into the registry which was done to try to find a fix.could something be checked or unchecked that is not supposed to be?before I search for any more answers thought it best to ask here first.by the way checking for the restore point was supposed to be normal routine check up.Thanks in advance if anyone an help here.Mark

sorry about that Tim.it said problems anyway in tools I do not have ffolder options so the buck stops there unless you mean in regedit/registry to follow those steps however I do have properties in my computer? Please Verify Thank You And this probably means I lose everything too right! Security suite, software already loaded, etc.if I find the CD

Now you are referring to doing a repair installation.....and if doing that, no you would not lose anything.

Correct referring to it. finding the xp pro disc is another matter. Now since system restore Can be done via msconfig I mentioned I found and downloaded a tool to it,may I ask this: would downloading Service pack 3 be an option to get both normal run command(s) i.e. msconfig and sys restore back?just wondering before I find the disc and do the ''R'' thing.

I suggest you get your system running properly before you download any service packs. :)

Msconfig and System Restore not working while regedit does is exactly what would happen if you were on a limited user account.

Are you sure you logged on as an Administrator?

interesting concept Sach!I own the machine No One else uses it.has my name everywhere in it therefore I am the Administrator so it says.not sure how to check that though.on a side note it has been bugging me to do updates so did,one of which was SP3 Tim but still nada on sys restore or msconfig :confused

Many of the newer generation of malware also disable regedit and the run button, and several other helpful features (like the task manager, for example), a malware scan should be in your immediate future just to insure it isn't something simple like a limited account. These features can be easily turned on/off by using simple registry edits. They are commonly referred to as "Group Policy Permissions/Restrictions" (I think ;) ). A fairly complete list can be found here, or you can download a very complete list in Excel .XLS format directly from Microsoft using this link. I hope this helps!

    Happy Holidays!

It was just a thought. A simple Control Panel >User Accounts should tell you your status.

and a good thought it was Sach2.it says I am Admin and guest is turned off.

on the flipside dlb you are duely noted.I have Kaspersky internet suite along with AdAware SE,AVG anti spyware and Super AntiSpyware.
lots of luckl getting through the suite but will run the other apps to make sure things are as they should be save the restore and config mishaps.looking at the list given in Group Policy apps fail to find the two that are causing grief?
    Also Happy Holidays everyone

Well I now fear I am officially shafted.tried repair from disc and of the several screens seen could not get passed where you enter 1 on black screen.I should have gotten to the one you type exit in after it repairs.perhaps doing that update re: sp 3 was not a good idea just because it is the final release for XP,xp pro specifically I have and use.have to wonder how all this happened unless running Perfect Disk RX that does''fix'' registry errors could have something to do with it?not that I use msconfig or ststem restore often, just nice to have those options. absolutely at a loss now :(

Yes I know I know it is an old thread however to update the group here.something was in fact corrupt in the OS,did everything the Mfg. asked but in the end the wind was getting a bigger drive and adding a gig, then reformatting the entire thing.still not totally finished doing the drivers but do know I have commands back aka sys restore, msconfig, etc.been a long time since checking back here but formatting as everyone knows takes time. rolleyes
there will be no sSP3 downloads this time no matter what.when the new OS's come out I will just have to upgrade and deal with it
