Is it Racism?

In our chemistry class in the lecture theater the other day, the teacher said "This isn't acceptable", apparently for no reason.

"What? Why?" we all thought. "Just look at yourselves".. she said.

So we did... and it turned out that by the divide in the center of the room, was almost (with only a few exceptions) was a racial divide. The entire left side of the room was occupied by black/brown people, and the entire left was occupied by white (and also chineese) people.

We laughed at ourselves. It didn't go through anyone's mind that "Oh, I better go sit on the other side of the room to *so and so* because he is a different colour to me"... or anything like that. It just so turns out that people seem to socialise with people of a similar colour, probably because they feel more comfortable that way, and so come into the room in clumps of people...somthing like that... anyway.

I don't judge people by their colour, thats for sure, but other people judge me. In fact I don't even relate a person's colour when I make their aquaintance. I probably wouldn't even notice to be fair!

But you'll be happy to know my seat selection was purley because it was the same seat I've sat in for the last 3 weeks for all my clases there, so completley unbiased by anyone ;)

    Strange stuff.

BTW : black is a skin colour. Nothing to do with origins. Don't get offended.

    you have enought people in your chemestry class for that to be noticeable? dude! but yeah... thats not rasicist, compared to what our old head of Chem used to say ^^;

It probably is based on how you come into the classroom... for example, in History today, i was the only person sitting on the left hand side of the room. coz i came in late, and decided to be odd :D

Various races congregate in suburbs where there are large numbers of their race, tending towards ghettos, enclaves, or whatever you wish to call them. They usually are happier, safer there. A similar thing has happened in your class only on a smaller scale. Just human nature as DTG said. Bazza

The name is Kohls, sizwiz, and I have her tomorow. Welp!

And yes, all 3 chemistry classes in one room makes it very noticable :p

I'd say its pretty much human nature, but Mrs Smartypants (sorry, I shan't comment on my thoughts on her... ) seemed to think there was somthing wrong with it. Sorry, I'll find someone who doesn't posess human nature to join the class.

You would be surprised. It wasn't until I moved up to Indiana that I had ever met a Klansman or a skinhead, or at least anyone proud of it.

acctually what she said was the racist
    remark
who is she to point out what she see's
    and how she percives it

when I was in the army, there where two bays on my floor
one just happend to be all "black"
one just happend to be all "white"

there was one"black" guy in the "white" bay
while I was the only "white" guy in the "black" bay

everybody made fun of us( it was funny,we agreed)
so we switched, just to see what would happen
well, it didn't work out at all

socially, we just didn't fit any other way
    so we whent back

    nothing racial taken

Y'know, I think you're right there jarcher. Perhaps one of the requirements for filling the role of head of chemistry was "racist background" :p Okay only kidding.... but our last head was racist and proud. Strange man.

    Hi All,

    My two cents:
There once was a lot of talk about America being a "melting pot" where immigrants of all colors and creeds could come and blend into the fabric of the "American Dream." But, the pot never melted and now we see self-segregation all over the place. Every big city has a "Chinatown, Germantown, Little Italy etc. . ." It may be a comfort factor type of thing, being with like others who speak your language, etc. . . But, in the long run, it makes it harder to get ahead. Ok. . . I'm rambling now and my pennies have been spent ;)

I guess I second what BAZZA said

What happened to your last Chemistry head? Was he removed or asked to leave? If you were aware of his personal beliefs, how much more so would the students who might suffer for them be? Were there were problems with the last head, your school's higher officials may be overreacting to any percieved bias in order to defuse further problems. I doubt P.C. is a purely American phenomenon.

(in general) i think england gets it right...if you speak with an English accent your English, if you don't your 'foreign'. as for just playings remarks, your probably right, but i was shocked at the intrinsic racism i found amongst 'my family' in Texas. maybe i was just given the wrong idea. aloha peeps....whatever your shade pps. is amongst a real word coz iespell doesnt recognise it.

Some suffer more. Just ask some black kid who had the crap beat out of him so some skinheads could earn their spiderwebs.

I'm currently living in Evington, Leicester and it is by far the largest Asian community outside of London. I love it here, it's the most friendly city I've lived in.

If I go down to my local with my best mate, I'm the only white guy in there, not a problem. I didn't even notice untill my parents came up and pointed it out. (Not in a bad way, they were just surprised, they come from mid-Wales where there is one Chinese family in the town, they run the Chinese restaraunt and one Indian family that run the Indian takeaway!)

He was racist, but not to the point people would get outright offended. He left because he retired, not because he was asked to leave.

He would just make observations which had a bias towards white native people. He was always tredding a thin line between acceptable and not acceptable.
