Is it the CPCU fan I need?

    Hey there, y'all!
I don't even know if this is in the right section or not. But I think I need the CPCU fan for my computer. What's happening is that when she gets hot she just shuts completely down. I noticed that the top fan on the back of my modem has stopped turning and the modem itself was pretty hot to the touch. So I plugged a little six inch clip on fan so that it would keep the back cooled down and it works! YAY! BUT that fan is annoying. So I want to replace the part on the computer and ditch the clip on fan.

Next question: How involved is it to change out that little fan? I mean, do you think I could do it myself. I'm actually pretty mechanically inclined.....................believe it or not! LOL!

you have an external modem that the fan has broke and your computer is shutting down because the CPU is overheating?

as for the modem, I've never replaced a fan on one(never even heard of one having one) ... but seems just a matter of opening it removing the fan and seeing the type, size and power and then buying one with the identical specs ... might check www.frozencpu.com or www.sidewindercomputers.com if they have a similar fan ... although they mainly deal with CPU and case fans ... I think it would be a good idea to call the manufacturer of the modem and ask them if they have a replacement, althought they'd probably just tell you to replace the entire thing

as for your CPU ... you would need to tell us your system specs ... but you might want to buy some canned air and dust the inside of your PC .. also motherboard monitor is a good way to tell exactly how hot it is getting ... you must know the make and model of your motherboard in order to use it .. also you can fry the CPU if it gets too hot, especially athlons ... if your CPU fan is shot I would not use the computer at all untill it is replaced

Along with Pyrate, i'm a little confused where this fan you are reffering to is located.

on the attatched Picture, Fan 1 is the Power supply fan. this would DEFINETLY cause overheating and shutdown, if not completely ruin the power supply unit (PSU).

Fan 2 is the rear case fan. some cases have 2 back there... yours likely has 1. if this is the broken fan, its fairy easy to fix, all you need is a screwdriver, a new fan, and fingers to plug the new one in the same spot the old one is plugged. :p

if its not one of these fans... could you be more specific?

In any case, its a VERY do-able thing, even for a computer novice. as always, you'd just need to be careful not to bump anything out of place and keep yourself grounded and try not to build up a static charge.

That's it!! That's the one......the one numbered one in your photo. It's not working. I've already taken the walls off of the moden and done a really good cleaning on it and that seemed to HELP keep it a little cooler. And as long as I have the little clip on fan blowing on it, I have zero problems. When I was inside there, I noticed the fan is like inside a little metal box. I don't know how to get in there. But then again, I'm wondering if it comes as a whole unit........with the fan inside that little box thingy.......hmmmmmm

that's not your modem ... that's your power supply ... it is not recommended to take that apart unless you really know what you are doing(worse case senario you would electricute yourself possibly be hospitalized or even die) ... best thing for you to do is get it replaced ... I would go with an Antec, Enermax, PC power & Cooling .. sounds to me like you should goto a shop and ask them to replace the power supply for you

Thank you, Pyrate!! I think I'll take your advice and have it replace by someone who knows what the heck they're doing! :)
