Is it theoretically possible for a virus to damage a PSU unit?

About 3 months ago I contracted a Java Agent exploit virus while using chrome. I loaded the PC and did a boot time scan with Avast and it quarantined the virus and when I returned to Windows I had Avast delete them, I did not handle the files myelf I let Avast do it. I don't know if it was residual damage from the virus or a voltage surge from the wall but my RAM and Mobo had to be RMA due to damage. Recently just before Hurricane Sandy hit the unexplained damage of my hardware (RAM, Mobo) occured again. As a precaution I also RMA'd the PSU as well and will replace the old surge protector as far as I can tell the Java virus did not return.

My question is it theoretically possible that a virus could damage a computer power supply unit? However outrageous the scenario maybe?

I only ask because if the virus did damage the PSU it would explain why the problem never occured till I got infected, possibly explain the 2nd occurance of hardware problems, and would be necessary to know in case I need to scan further. The first time I scanned with Avast, spybot, malwarebytes, outpost, and spyware terminator. Avast was the first I used everything after Avast was clean. The 2nd time I only scanned with Avast but will do additionaltests when I get the RMA'd components back since I need a stable system to do scanning from within windows.
