OK so I hit what seems like the common problem from what I read on other sites that windows 8/8.1 at times recongnizes ones dvd rom at other times it doesn't... so I can fix the dvd rom problem that's not the issue the issue is this... when I fix it for windows I get a pop up on iTunes that states something to the affect of registry is missing and I have to reinstall iTunes for it to find the dvd rom... When I fix it for iTunes it then windows itself can't find it...

It's a vicious cycle... if anyone got any thoughts I'd be happy to hear them, the dvd rom is brand new and the computer is brand new... I wonder if it's iTunes causing these problems since I haven't noticed them since the latest update of iTunes last month...

I'm running MalwareBytes right now but I don't think it's a malware thing...

    Thanks in advance

It's not malware. Windows 8 doesn't natively support ASPI. Which in Win XP and earlier versions was provided by Adaptec. ITunes needs it own version of ASPI called GearASPIwdm for it to run properly. Thus your loop -In fixing the problem Windows gets rid of the GearASPI ITunes wants. I don't have a solution, but here are two suggestions. 1. Go to the Gear site http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.php & see if their Win 8 compatible driver works and is able to satisfy ITunes. 2. Since the 64 bit version of ITunes doesn't virtualise properly, use a 32 bit version. I hope this helps and maybe someone with a better or different answer will chime in.

Thanks for the quick response K@ABC, perhaps your answer is the reason for various other iTunes problems I'm having too. I'm downloading a 32bit version of iTunes to see if that'll work.

For you or anyone else who reads this, I'm willing to scrap iTunes although I need something that can access my iPod to add/remove music to it as that's really the only reason why I keep iTunes on the computer.
