Is it worth it?

Well, I was planning on Upgrading my PC, plans and specifics are here. What I want to know, is this:

Is this PC going to be prone to dieing, even if I buy these upgrades? My dad is forbidding me from buying the parts because he thinks so. The computer has not been modified (hardware wise) since we bought it in 2000. I wanted to get a more... professional opinion. From someone who knows what they're talking about.

About the only thing that might increase the longevity is a new power supply but I really wouldn't bother with trying to make it more powerful though it could last you for another 10 years as is, plus the CRT is another liability down the road. Make a donation to goodwill if you can.;)

    I agree with dad.:)

    What is CRT?

anyhow, thanks for the advice. I can only spend so much on this thing, and, besides, even if it will last another 10 years, I'd hope that there's something at least equivalent to XP quality by then. I've heard that it's a very desirable OS. Though, some say that Windows 7 stacks up to XP, without the compatibility issues of vista.

CRT is the same as the heavy old deep monitors/TV's and not the new thin LCD TV's and monitors.

As to your machine being W7 compatible, I would forget about that. XP was/is a good OS and there's no point to try and upgrade from that. Keep it updated and you'll be fine for quite a while. There's a shopkeeper that I know and still uses his old XT for business.

Then listen to your dad! Save your money and buy or build a new computer - one that will carry you well into the future, instead upgrading one from the distant past that cannot be brought even to the present.

Your Dad's right. At most I would add some RAM and use it for an email/web backup for when your new PC is tied up, otherwise donate it to someone who has none. It will not be a good modern gaming PC.
