Is it worth to build your own desktop?

I'm in the market for a new Pc desktop. I have a laptop now, but I dont need a laptop anymore, and I like desktops a bit better. Anyway, I was wondering if it is worth to build your own desktop or buy one from an OEM dealer. I dont game, I just get online really. But I HATE slow PC's, so I would want it decently fast.

Any recommendations? I'm thinking about going mac, but that 1700 is hard to spend on a PC.

I build all my desktops. I like to spec out the items I want in my PC. So to me it is worth it to build your own.

Can't comment on the Macs, not familiar with them.

I also like to build my own but it`s usually more expensive I find, especially the cost of an OS along with premade choices for you. If you can build a rig online speccing the components, including PSU and Motherboard from a reputable dealer, you will save money. All depends on what you want and how much you`re willing to spend.

Mac? Well, you can't build your own..... or upgrade it.... or repair it..... etc.
And, you won't find programs or accessories at Wal*Mart.

So there's really not much there, for the techie, nerd, geek or PC Enthusiast.
"Appliance Operators" love it though. (except maybe for the high price)

I built desktop PC's for 25 years, professionally, before I retired three years ago.
I still build my own. Putting the parts together, any 5th grader could do.
It's tweaking, tuning and making it run at absolute Optimum performance that's the hard part. Today, that's my specialty.

Also, knowing what motherboards and which processors work the best together don't hurt anything either.

Windows XP or Vista, right out of the box, runs like crap.
It takes a concerted effort to make it really run good.

Many retail PC outlets sell a "Bare Bones" system, already put together and tested.....that's a great place to start building your own 'Super System'.

    Good Luck and Merry Christmas!

yeah but all the problems associated with windows is pushing me away.. and all the damn viruses, malware etc... Its becoming too much. sure I have my Pc protected but then it only takes on open door for them to come in. Apples, I have yet to hear a mad/sad/upset story about them..

Well, there you go, get a Mac. I am on a PC with no virus protection, and I am ok. My trial of the Nortons expired the other day, and I am just too lazy to download a new one.

    Bring the Viruses on! :cool

Well, not to make this a war between PC and Mac, I found that the worst culprit for allowing this virusémalware invasion to be the one that sits in between the chair and the monitor, I don`t see what choosing a Mac or PC has to do with it? They are all vulnerable sooner or later. I`d look at your budget and needs and decide on that basis instead and use MG`s as a resource for PC issues.:)

sorry if i'm taking this thread too far off track, but i was having an argument with a die-hard mac fanboy, he was saying that macs are invincible to viruses, but I said that it's only because windows currently holds 90+% of the market share, and virus makers want to infect the operating system that the most people have (which would be windows)

so it's not that macs are more secure, it's just that more people want to make viruses for windows instead.

Yes of course, the buggers will concentrate on Windows especially now that we`re getting more serious rip off artistségangs rather than kiddie wannabee`s who just want to destroy and laugh.

I still say if one is prudent with proper protection I believe one would be as safe or safer as going into a restaurant giving the waiter your CC card. That`s just my opinion of course.:) By the way, don`t waste your time arguing with a fanboy of any type, it ain`t worth your precious time.;)

Well I build custom computers apprx 200/month and i do use a mac for the designs and the OS X is junk but fast VERY FAST and there are a fair varity of different back to the point it is FOR SURE worth it to build your own to ensure quality.

Just a little timbit here the only reason HP,DELL and other companys can make them so cheap is because they use the cheapest parts.:cool

If you only surf any PC on sale will be quick enough your internet connection is the bottleneck.

I say build one if you want the experience other than that any pre built will be fine for what you need it for.

I'm running FIOS, but even that doesnt seem fast as it should be on here. But again, I'm just an internet surfer, so i dont need blazing speeds to jump from page to page. It does good now.

I think my laptop will suffice for now, all seems well and I havent had any problems with it so far after the new install.
