Is Java Script Running?

I have no idea what it does, when it's needed, or how to tell whether it's running or not. It is enabled in Explorer 7 and in SeaMonkey 2.1.5. I try to update my camera's software at GoPro Hero3, and get an error message that I must download Javascript. This happens in BOTH browsers. How can I track this down?

I have, and always have had Java installed in my computer. I installed the latest update a few days ago.

This may be important: I used a registry cleaner months ago which made my browsers inoperable. I don't remember how I fixed it, but they both run now, although SLOWER than before the problem occurred. Is it possible that there's a registry omission? Is there a registry "restorer" that I can use if this is the problem. Repair console in XP???

Java is NOT Javascript. Having updated Java to version 7 update 11 has nothing to do with a javascript message you see.

In XP, you should be running IE 8. I'm not sure if this works for IE 7.
Close the browser then do the following:
    Start > Run
    Type: cmd
    Type: regsvr32 jscript.dll
    Then enter.

All I know is that SeaMonkey 2.15 uses the engine that FF 4 used. That version came out in 2011 so I haven't used it for awhile.

Do you have addons in SeaMonkey?
In FF, I use Noscript which turns javascript off. I can turn it on by bits and pieces for sites I'm unsure of.

Thank you, and I hope you can get me through this. As I said, I'm thinking there's something very basic that's wrong, because of the darn registry cleaner I used some months ago. I'll not be doing that any more.

I've had IE 7 for about a year or so. Before that was running IE 6 with this XP installation. Should I update IE to version 8 ?

Yes, have addons, and Java platform is among them

    dllRegisterServer in jscript.dll succeeded

    And everything works now?

If not, can you provide the exact message you got when you tried to install your camera software. I am sure it did not tell you to download JavaScript, as JavaScript is part of Windows, as well as part of every web browser.

    Yes, that's a good idea.

In Firefox, Java is listed as a plugin. That is different from an addon. I'm not sure how SeaMonkey does it.

As far as Java, you should also have a Control Panel icon for it. Click on the Java icon and click on the Security tab. The box at the top: Enable Java content in the browser is probably checked/ticked.

I'd advise you to uncheck/untick it because although it has been patched, it is still a security hole waiting to be infected.

Same as before. The camera website showed a screen "trying to find java", and then showed a button telling me to download it. I finally downloaded the camera software "manually", which was an option if no Javascript.

Is there a registry entry that must be in place in addition to the plugin/addon in the browser?

Is there a way of finding out whether or not Javascript is running? Maybe it IS running and there's a problem with the camera software website.

What does Javascrpt do? Does it run when the browser is opened, or only sometimes, depending on whether a web page needs it or not?

I MADE THE CHANGES TO THE REGISTRY PER "METHOD 2" in the link below:

    http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/911183-jscript-dll-failed.html

.........................should I have done this? If not, then I can undo it. Remember that I use both IE and SeaMonkey.

OK.............is there an advantage to it over IE 7? Computer is older and don't want to update stuff for fear of overworking computers capability. Always aware that newer versions of things often require more system speed, memory, etc.

    You're right......it's a plugin.

I have the Java icon in CP. OK...................I unchecked the box.

I have computers from 2004, 2005, and 2009 all running XP and updated to IE 8. I don't have problems but I don't use IE to browse; I feel safer with Firefox.
I never update immediately; I wait until the problems are ironed out. IE 8 came out in 2009 so I think you are safe in updating it.

Here is Secunia's Advisory for IE 7
    http://secunia.com/advisories/product/12366/
21% unpatched, The most severe unpatched Secunia advisory affecting Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.x, with all vendor patches applied, is rated Moderately critical.

Here is Secunia's advisory for IE 8
    http://secunia.com/advisories/product/21625/
23% unpatched, The most severe unpatched Secunia advisory affecting Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.x, with all vendor patches applied, is rated Less critical.

Although IE 8 has more items unpatched, it is safer.

I believe MS is still patching IE 6, 7 and 8. I got an out-of-cycle patch on 14 Jan. 2013.
