knoppix is a great Linux program that runs from the cd. I for once woundn't recomended to install it onto your hard drive because it's really a hassle. I tried and I get a particion error, no matter how many times I tried to partition it to a linux extencion particion it keeps telling me It's not. Well to make this short, I recomend installing REDHAT 9.0 for starts. It's not that difficult to install, I would say it's sort of like installing Windows. I would recomend to install Linux on a computer no latter than 1997. Because trying to configure old hardware is going to be a hassle.

I would recomend to read this manual to install REDHAT 9.0 http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/install-guide/

You could get the boot iso file here
    http://mirrors.acm.jhu.edu/mirrors/linux/redhat-9.0/images/

And the REDHAT 9.0 iso files here
    http://lame.lut.fi/linux/RedHat/9.0/en/iso/i386/
make sure they are the ones with the following disk sizes
    638mb
    646mb
    485mb
yes they are three disks. And your going to need all of them to install it....

    good luck....

RH9 is old and does not have any recent technology. I recommend installing Fedora Core 2. Basically it is Red Hat with the latest technology upgrades and features. More widely supported on message boards as well.

Download Fedora Core 2. Core 3 is like BETA and 1 is also old.

Actually, Fedora Core 3 final will be released officially on November 8. As it stands, they're already on FC3 Release Candidate 1. You could go with it and have very good luck, or you could wait just a bit longer for the final version. It's not really all that far into Beta.

I personally like Fedora and would recommend that, but I can think of two other easy to install and get started with distributions: Ubuntu Linux (which is based off of Debian) and SUSE Linux. Any of those three distributions should be easy to install and let you experience some of the the best of what Linux offers.

Any Linux distribution can be installed to a partition on your harddrive. The thing people like about Knoppix is that you can use it without actually having to install it to your computer. Generally, you'll want to use a different distro if you're going to do that.

Whats your processor? you can also right click on the desktop, click properties, and then click Settings. Then it should say either 32 bit or 64 bit.
