I was thinking of switching to linux or at least making it dual boot with windows. My friend says I may not like it because i don't like reading or typing. I'm really lazy :p anyway, how good is linux?

has anyone seen this cartoon about a linux supervillan?

welcome to the first day of the rest of your life. no longer are you content with the operating system forced apon you by the world. you crave to be different. well my friend, a litlle penguin has an answer. yes, linux is good, it is very good. if you dont want to type alot, then dont use the console. for a beginner with no previous linux experiance, i would recommend mandrake. other options are suse and red hat 9. yes, i have seen that....switch to ....whatever you want.....[linux] [linux] [linux]

Hmmm, you typed your question while reading from a monitor screen...

Perhaps you should choose a different hobby? ;)

    Hello Jim S,
    and Willkommen zu dem MajorGeeks!

I have messed with the linux a little bit myself. It takes me a LOT of time and effort to get it going... but then again, I'm new at it. But, yes, as Adrynalyne said above, it is not for the lazy,

Unless of course you are one who can "set up" your system and then not tweak it any.
But, you see, most people who post messages on this board are avid tweakers. me, I can't keep my hands off of my computer. Constantly messing with it, you know.

Ifn you want to mess with the linux, I suggest looking at this link, for the Knoppix distribution:

    http://www.edmunds-enterprises.com/linux/cart.php/ba/pdtl/product/160

And , remember, if you hang around with this crowd on this site, you tend to pick up things about computers now and again. It just happens. This is that kind of "scene" or whatever.
So, have fun no matter what. That distro in the link there will run from your computer "live", without messing with your harddrive, unless you want it to.

If you don't like it, big deal. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
    Regards,
    Robert

    yea

I think i could get over my laziness. Linux sounds very interesting. I think maybe if i turned off the tv for a while i would get bored enough to read something about linux. yep that's probably a good idea. I'll look into that Knoppix thing. I did download red hat a while ago, but ill also look into mandrake as well.

    just a suggestion

just a suggestion, but try to learn at least some of the command line interface first. it serves the same function to linux as msdos did to the ancient versions of windows... and it all depends on what you are going to do with it.. and personally i reccomend SuSE, but they all seem to be fairly good.

    Hey Jim S.
If you go for it, post about your adventures when they get interesting (which they will).
Its a selfish interest on my part – I'm addicted to this site, so it takes all my time, and I love to see the occasional *nix post.
BTW – I'm studying my guts out over here trying to learn this stuff.
I look forward to the day when I can have a second box totally devoted to “daily builds” or whatever, of a testing or unstable version of some OS (probably debian) and crash that baby every night or so, so that I can send back reports to the development team and in my own humble way participate in the community.
Its just too much, hard to believe the love there is... people giving freely of their expertise, their time. Gives me hope for the world.
    Lots of luck to you,

    Robert
