I use Firefox 22 with AdBlock Plus and NoScrpt and I've noticed that the MG.com site has a rectangular white object with a dark background that shows up on the site, which disappears when clicking anywhere off the object. What gives here?

I have the same as you but have adblock and noscript turned off for MG only.

Out of curiosity, I turned them both back on and refreshed the page, still the same MG just minus the ads.

I go back to my homepage then I push Ctrl-Shift-Delete which clears all items in FF and then do an F5 which refreshes my homepage then go to MG's page and the white rectangle with dark background reappears. I have FF set to not remember previous sites.

Sorry, I'm just not getting what you are. I even marked mg as untrusted in noscrpt, refreshed the page and still didn't get the box you're getting. Have you tried another browser to see if you are getting the same problem?

I have a blue box top right that is a facebook like button and it floats over the top of the quick links button on the top bar. This prevents me using quick links because it brings up the create a new facebook account page whenever I click on quick links
I am using the latest Chrome and AdBlock + can't get rid of it :confused As I don't ever use any social networks it is all wasted on me and is just a nuisance ;)

Majorgeeks is not playing games as you say but this is an issue for ad-block as I run Firefox Nightly 32.0a1 and with no add-ons and Majorgeeks works fine with no issues, so this is a add-on issue and not a site or forum one.

Using Ad-blockers is your choice and we will respect that but you also need to respect that advertisement allows in a major part the forum to stay online as it makes no money at all, basically its a loss leader.

If you remove the ad-block add-on does the site view ok, if you use IE with no add-ons does the site view ok?

If I disable AdBlock + the Facebook like button is still displayed floating over the Quick Links drop down button and also the buttons appear on the left side. These are the only elements I block as they will never be of value to me as I never use social networks.
Just noticed when in advanced edit reply mode the facebook like button is in the correct place above the quick links drop down any other page the problem occurs. Didn't try with IE as don't use it maybe I will install later.

    Hi

If the icons you are seeing are

Then this is normal and no changeable as the forum needs to make money and being socialably active is one way to promote the site, its not malware or a game!

When I used IE, it turns out that it's a Facebook "Like us" plugin rectangle that disappears when you click the X.

Need to really give me a screenshot of what you are seeing as I do not get a Like Us rectangle that's an issue, I get one under the Sign In box, if that's what you mean? (highlighted in red)

Just installed IE 10 and then IE 11 and all pages display the facebook like button correctly so not an MG problem per se :)
In my case it must be a Chrome page formatting issue and it is just an annoyance not really a problem as everything else is OK. My work around is to click on the drop down arrow not the words quick links as the arrow is just outside the button's boundary :)

Just as an aside using IE again reminded me of why I went to Firefox for a while and then settled on Chrome ........ hmmmm maybe I should give Firefox another run ;)
Back on Chrome now though :cool

Not an MG issue at all rather than "per se"

But I agree with you in that various browsers will display websites in various forms, some comes down to addons and some to security levels in said browser, I do thing the issues here are 3rd party add-on related as vanilla browsers I have tried today and that includes

IE11 in Windows 8.1 Pro (on a desktop and Sufrace Pro Tablet)
    Firefox Nightly 32.0a1
    Chrome 35.0.1916.114 m

have no issues as described in this thread, if anyone has screenshots and step by steps plus versions of Windows and apps used including all addons in said browsers, plus if no addons was used in said browsers I will be more than willing to take this further with Tim and Jim.

Sort of is and I'll give you an example. The company I work for has several websites and we pay our site designers and coders extra to do full compatibility testing for the four major browsers being IE, Chrome, Firefox and Safari and usually have no problems. On the other hand one of our major global suppliers based in London only design their website to be compatible with IE8 and later. If we want to use our trade login we have to use IE because no other browser can login (now it is actually rejected). We drew the supplier's IT people's attention to the problem and they said they had no intention of spending any money to fix it because everyone can use IE and so now all other browsers are excluded so problem solved rolleyes

I am not saying this is the situation here at MG but it is conceivable that if money or time was tight then the added cost and extra time for compatibility testing means it could fall by the wayside.

For me it doesn't really matter but for Puppywunder58 sounds like the whole button and box is being displayed as an opaque coloured rectangle on the top layer and when you click somewhere else on the page it loses focus and goes behind but that's just me guessing ;)

    I'm with you joffa

But I have to say the issue is not a site one but likely browser based and if add-ons are in the equation then a forum or site cannot be held responsible and TBH the cannot for an additions as you the end user do not dictate direction.

If for instance Majorgeeks adds a Twitter feed icon, it is its prerogative to do so. if you do not wish to view the he site then that's your prerogative also. we have choices and the site and forum need to make money to keep on going as its not a free ride, I know many of us dedicate our free time to answer tech questions freely (OMG the malware folks Im in awe of) and that add value to the forum , but to keep it online its not free. So sadly some adverts and social media icons will be evident.

If said adverts or media icons fudge up 3rd party ad blockers etc then its a per user issue as to allow or deny.

We can choose not to visit a site dependant on its actions, I recently deleted my account on twitter as I did not like the ethos of the media.

We are agreed then coz I understand about having to raise revenue as I too have also run a forum and so that's why I only block the social media buttons and let the rest through so MG still gets some revenue. Personally I just don't like social media and have chosen not to use it where possible.
If you want a laugh ......... don't tell anyone;)..............I actually have to use facebook and twitter and yammer at work as three of our sites have Twitter and Facebook feeds and we use yammer for information sharing within the company ........oh and yes we have like buttons on all our sites too..... ugh rolleyes

Looks like we've hijacked the thread LOL
