Is Ms Edge Running Surreptiously On My Pc?

Could someone please explain why I am receiving these [error] messages when I use CCleaner. I use Firefox as my browser not Edge but very often when I run CCleaner I receive an [error] message telling me Edge needs to be closed so the internet cache can be cleaned (cf. attached image: Errr_mssg_1). When I click on “Yes” I receive another message saying Edge is not responding and do I want it forced closed (cf. attached image: Errr_mssg_2).

 

Are you quite sure that Edge is not set as the default browser - that's the Win 10 default? It would cause Edge to open whenever you click a url.

 

I was aware Microsoft make Edge the default browser but after recently resetting my PC I had to download Firefox anew and then make it my default browser.

I was sure Firefox was my default browser and when I click on URLs they open in Firefox. However, I though it would be good idea to check after what you said and went into Start > Settings > Apps > Default apps and the default Web browser is Firefox.

If I do not post again it is because the problem has not recurred.

 

As per the article linked in post #4, I turned off Microsoft Edge as a background app. However, it keeps turning itself back on. How is this happening?

PS Edge will re-enable itself after a Windows update.

That explains it! My PC has had a Windows update since I turned Edge off in privacy settings.
