Is my computer fried?

I have an Emachines Computer S1862. Running windows XP.
The Power button broke that turns the computer on. So me and my not so bright idea's I decided to take the front bezel off of my computer.....unhook the little black and white power sw cord from the power button and turn it on that way. And it worked a few times until I ended up accidently touching the end of the power sw cord (that turned on my computer) to the metal on the front of my computer. When I did that I heard a small pop from inside the computer and of course my computer went off and would not come on again. I was not for sure if my computer was fried or not so I went and bought a new power sw cord and a new front bezel (which replaced the broke button) for my computer.

OK.....here is the problem... When I turn the computer on - the computer will start - the fan is running - but there is NOTHING coming up on the monitor - it is just blank. And then after about 30 seconds the pc will shut itself off. When I try to turn it right back on it will not respond....but I can go back about 15 minutes later and try to turn it on again and the computer will come back on again with the same results....it shuts off in about 30 seconds - with nothing on the monitor.
After reading this stupid story can anyone offer any suggestions? If the computer is even worth fixing or if it can even be fixed? Is there anything else I can try to get it to come on and stay on?
    Thanks for any help!

Remember that for next time which hopefully there isn't. :)

Do you get any beeping when you try to start up?

When your power up does the light on the monitor change? Does it get ready to receive a signal or does it do nothing?

    Welcome to MG:)

Check all connections, reseat memory & Video card, Check MOBO for burn marks, make sure nothing is grounding out your MOBO.

Then try CMOS reset, do this by removing the battery on the MOBO for about 10 min then put her back in, Cross Fingers & try to boot.

    Good luck

The monitor light is blinking green before I turn the computer on and when I turn the computer on it stays green - no blinking. It registers the light on the cd rom light because it blinks too when I turn the computer on. ANd there is a red light showing inside the computer when I turn it on too.

I already took the battery out and tried that ....... crossed my fingers....but didn't have any changes when starting computer.

I looked for burn marks ......and any residue coming from capasitors and such....but I see nothing unusual.

How do I reset the memory and video card? Just take them out and put them back in?

    THanks for your replies,
    Dena

Is that what you're after? You can do it that way or if you have the manual for the board look in there. It will tell you where to set the jumper to reset the CMOS.

Sounds like the power is there. Just have to find where it is stopping.

You could do that too. Just make sure you reseat them correctly.
