Is My Gpu Screwed? Confirmation..

I was playing No Man's Sky when suddenly my screen was filled with horizontal green lines. Panicking, I restarted my PC. After restarting, I keep seeing these horizontal lines and unable to boot to windows normally. I just get stuck in black screen when the login screen is supposed to be.

Currently I'm in Safe Mode, but I still see these horizontal lines distortion. I tested with another monitor and the horizontal lines are still there. I printscreen, and when I move the image up and down, the lines do not follow the image.

Just confirming if indeed it is my GPU that is screwed. And if so, what kind of information do I need to determine which GPU is compatible with my motherboard, etc? I'm currently using Radeon HD 7800.

You would have to look hard to find a new graphics card that is NOT compatible with your motherboard. Of course, since, you didn't tell us your motherboard, we cannot help there, except it most likely supports PCIe x 16 which is the most common graphics card interface today. Your bigger worries will be your power supply. Graphics cards often the most power hungry devices in our systems - even more than many CPUs. And they often require additional power connections directly from the PSU. So you need to look at your PSU, or just plan on buying a new one too.

Try and see what temps are it looks like it could be running a little warm that can cause distortion lines before it restarts.

I agree with sexyand81. What you described does sound like overheating. You may need to pull the case cover and see if there's dust/debris plugging any ventilation openings and fans and air dust the machine. I can't guarantee this will solve the problem because the graphics card may be beginning to fail.

Good point to look at temps. GPUs can run hotter than CPUs but heat is still an issue. If clean of heat trapping dust, you can try blasting a desk fan into the open side and see if that helps.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

I opened the case and used compressed air to blow off the dust. It's been a while since I did it so yea some dust had accumulated. It wasn't that much to completely block the airflow though. Unfortunately I just tried rebooting and it's still showing the same problem.

That settles it.. My GPU is fried =\ I wasn't able to tell what motherboard I have since I unplugged and left it to cool down. I'll go look for a new GPU that fits with my PSU, or upgrade PSU if necessary. Good to know my motherboard is okay for most GPUs!

its not your motherboard that you have to worry about due to the fact that most graphics cards need a PCI or PCIE slot just make sure your motherboard has one of those slots and its free. More powerful graphics card will require a power plug from the PSU (Depending on connection as mine is a 6 pin plug) and some require minimum output I seen some needing a min 300 watt PSU but more powerful the more power required.
