It is an 800w PSU, can it run

    i7 930
    p6x58
    3x2gb ram
    4xhdd
    2xdvd
    2x8800GTS

I finished my build last night, just before I went to bed I tried to rate the system using the windows 7 ratings and it rebooted almost instantly, I tried again and the same thing, I'm worried the PSU isn't up to it what do you reckon?

Thanks that is a handy website, it says it needs 848w! SOB, Also have PSUs gone up? I swear when I bought the 800w about 2 years ago it was no more than £40.

All i suggest is to unplug one of the GPUs until such time as you have a new PSU

This was my plan, I was gonna go home and try Starcraft 2 with the SLI and problems and I'll remove a card and look for a new PSU.

Any advice as to what PSU I buy? I'm looking 1000w, Cheap and silent.

You may want to invest into a new video card. A good 1000w psu is going to run you around $230

If you spend a few more bucks you can get a new video card that will be better then your two 8800GTS cards

Whats the brand of the PSU you have now?

    Hi

This is the one I have, it's serving me well --

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139007

It's $230, but you DON'T want to skimp on a cheap PSU! It currently has a $20 mail-in rebate and $1.99 shipping as well.

Aaacckkk! 1000W PSU's?:eek A tad of overkill there eh?;) Unless the OP is future proofing his current investment. I'm running a pair of 9800GT's (direct successor to the 8800 series but 55nm) in a Q6600 config and on an Antec 500W! I realize that the 8800 series took more power but 800W should be enough.

The 8800GTS takes 26A and 400W, including system, what are your PSU specs, especially the +12V rails?

Just get something like a 750w corsair psu.

i suspect the other psu is of a bad make, becuase 850 watt should suffice.

It was the PSU as soon as I started getting to a part of Star craft where the graphics cards needed to be used the PC restarted, I removed one of the cards and it was fine, The PSU was fairly cheap £40 IIRC.

The whole idea behind how I build my PC's is I can gradually upgrade them over time. I figure in that instance now a new PSU is a better bet when I have trouble running games on my SLI'd 8800's then I can buy a new latest and greatest card, then when that is old buy another card to SLI that. I might leave it a while has I have spent so much on it recently live with 1 GPU SC2 still looks amazing on maximum settings and with visible drop in FPS.

I am unsure on the PSU spec I bought it from Maplin ages ago when my old one went pop.

This isn't it but it was from the same store and about the same price.

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=264565

I might just keep and ebay eye open for a second hand one going cheap.

If there is one piece of a PC that should be the best you can afford it's the PSU, this is the heart of the PC and if it fails it can take other parts with it, so beware.

No way! You must have plugged in something wrong or did not tell us of a bunch of hardware. Using the hardware you said you have, I come up with 558W minimum, 608W recommended. Even by using the following exaggerated figures,
    Motherboard: High End - Desktop
    CPU Utilization: 100% TDP
Hard Drives: 4 x High RPM SATA
    Drives: DVD RW/DVD+RW
    Fans: 4 x 120mm
    System Load: 100% (peak load)
    Capacitor Aging: 30%
I only get 751W minimum, 801 Recommended. So what did you punch in to get 848W?

Note that I also used the pro version for which I have a paid subscription and the primary difference is that it allows for individual selection for each graphics card, and it also recommends an UPS size. It too recommends 801W using those exaggerated figures.

I would get a quality 750 watt power supply with high amps on the 12+ rail Around 60+ Also get a PSU with one 12+ rail not mufti 12+ rails

My TX750W has 60 amps on the 12+ rail

    I run a GTX 275 and a 9800 GT on my Corsair TX750W

I must admit i was surprised at the 848 watt.
As i put in my first post i thought 800 was more than enough.
I had no reason to disbelieve the OP as they know what is running in the PC.

I agree. Single rail is the way to go, unless the multi-rail PSU is able to redistribute, as some can. BUT - I really don't like those either because that requires sophisticated circuitry and while it works, it also means more parts and therefore more potential for something to do wrong. KISS!

I was not suggesting any intentional deception. I just don't want you, chris-red, to waste money on a new PSU when the 800W you currently have should be plenty powerful enough, assuming it is a quality supply.
