    Hello 18coombe.
You stated, its making a ticking noise. Doesn't sound very healthy. I think it may be a hard drive platter rubbing up against something. Has there been any damage to the medium recently? and when was the last time it was used. Personally, I think I would take it into a shop, and see if they can do a data recovery, but personally it sounds like your hard drive may have had its last run :(

I would try to salvage as much as possible to some sort of removable storage, then see about getting a replacement drive.

Many thanks. Managed to kick start drive and duplicated it to an external. Now off to seek out a new drive. The PC is five years old and used most days so it's probably suffering from old age like me! No damage to it as it's been sitting under desk for ages.
