Hi my PC died recently and now my Wii isn't connecting to internet.

I have a wired DLink router. Whch i also have a Wii hooked up to on a LAN. Now if I remember correctly I setup my PC to work with the router, I guess it configured with my ISP through the PC and then everything else could just be added to the router. Even when my PC was off the Wii could work fine through the router. Now the PC has been off for a while. At first I was able to go online but then after useing for a while it has stopped being able to make a connection.

I am curious if my internet connection could not be sustained without contact with my ISP throughy my PC wich my internet connection was originally made. Or if it's a problem with my Wii.

I know this is a PC forum but throught that this would be a general networking question.

    Thank you for your time.

what kind of internet service do you have?
How is your network set up, modem to router to pc? if so, short answer is no. It doesnt depend on the first pc you attach to the router.

Your ISP service provider might require username and password authentication. This would be if you had a much older modem. Have you simply tried cycling power to your modem? I would cycle power to the modem and then the router. This might solve your problem if you haven't tried it. Let me know if that works.

Well. i'm coming to an internet cafe to do this so I will responding once a day. But thanks for the feedback.

I've modem connected to wired router then to PC and then another to the Wii and then to a second PC. I have DSL.

Since my first post I found out the other PC isn't working either so it's not the Wii. I've Also noticed there is no more Green Lights flashing on the router, not even the power LED. At first this made me think the router had just died so I hooked the ethernet cable right from the modem to the Wii and that didn't work either. So there is something else keeping the Wii from accessing now. Would the Router just not be activated if there is no activity going through it?

I did try unplugging the modem and plugging it back in. It did't make a difference with just the Wii hook up. Does it matter how long it's unplugged? I can't remeber where but I once read something during set-up about waiting one minute.

Maybe once the router died I need to configure access to my ISP more specificly if it's just the Wii? The Wii has an internet channel so i'll be able surf the net and this forum from home once I figure that out.

When I had the Wii run through the router it would gain access fine on very basic settings : Under "auto-obtain IP address" I had "NO". Under Use proxy server? I had "NO". Uner "Auto-obtain" DNS?" I had "NO". But if i am not going through the router would I then need to change those settings? I'm not sure what they all mean .

You mentioned a password, if I go under "use Proxy server" there is a field for password and name, port and sever name. But is a"proxy server" like my ISP?

    Pardon the epic noob-ness.
    Back tommorow.

Here is what you should try. Tell the Wii to auto obtain DNS address. If this doesn't work also tell it to auto obtain IP address. I do not have a Wii so somebody else might want to comment about how the Wii is set up and whether it needs to have a static IP, but I am pretty sure it does not.

If you have another computer you could plug directly into the modem you would need to do the same thing. I am surprised the Wii could get on the internet with it set the way you described. With your second computer, you need to make sure that it is set to automatically acquire and IP address and DNS address. Go to Start->Connections->Show all Connections->Right click on Local Area Connection and go to Properties->Scroll down the list until you get to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on properties. Then click on obtain an IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.

This should allow you to get on the internet.

    Let me know.

I think I need a new router if the Lights are not on, that mean's it's broken right?

So if I need a new router anyway I'm going to get one and try all that stuff you said to do with the Wii. It's a long story but the modem is on the top floor and the second PC is in the basement and we have the cords set up in a way that running the modem dirrectly to the second PC is possible BUT we'd be switching it all back when the new PC gets gets here at the top of Sept. So i'm trying to figure out what went wrong when both the Wii and the second PC where doing fine without the first PC for a while and then died. It must be the router.

But I will try playing with the settings on the Wii, as that would alow me more access to the forums.

Oh...just wondering, can you restart threads that haven't been used for a while, like if I don't get the router till payday or is it better to start a new thread? Just wondering if moderators re-read things or if you need to finish things when they remember every thing.

Without knowing your router no lights is definitely not good. You might look around the house and see if you can find a power supply/transformer that has the same voltage and the the same or more amps for output. This would allow you to see if maybe just the power supply failed on your router and save a little money and hopefully keep the same settings that have worked for you before.

I think if you repost to the thread it comes back to the top.

    Routers seldom fail.
No lights might mean check the power. If the outlet tests good and the transformer seems good and all connections are tight try taking it all apart, put it together again and do a reset on the router.
