I just tried out the freeware Registry cleaner in C Cleaner.
Is the PC Tools Registry mechanic superior enough to C Cleaner that it is worth purchasing?

Not in my opinion, ccleaner has satisfied a whole bunch of users for a good while now, never, ever had one problem with ccleaner. ed

I'd recommend backing up any registry changes, that ccleaner does. I ran into a problem about a year ago....nowadays, one may not have to worry about it. But, it is a good thing to do, since it is modifying the HIGHLY IMPORTANT registry.

I agree with all the above posts. With all the quality, free reg cleaners that are available, I (personally) see no reason to pay for a reg tool. I'm not familiar with Registry Mechanic, but guessing from the name, it probably does more than just clean the registry. It probably has some optimizers or something. Still, there are free tools for this too. In addition to CCleaner's registry cleaner, I personally recommend these two apps (both 100% free) :
Wise Registry Cleaner and IOBit's Advanced Window Care. Both are available here at Major Geeks. I would have provided links, but something really wierd is happening with my browser(s) all of a sudden.....

EDIT: the wierdness has passed. Here's the links:

Oh yeah... I almost forgot... check out NTRegOpt (stands for NT Registry Optimzer), it's kind of like defrag for the registry. It does require a system reboot after running the optimization process....

Registry Mechanic can be more agresive to registry,so if you don't have knowledge and expiriance in this field,a don't recommend you to use Registry Mechanic.Everybody on this forum can say that CCleaner is the best software for the beginers so try it.

Registry Mechanic is a waste of $30 bucks in my opinion. It works no better than CCleaner's registry function or the Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, two of my favorite cleaners - which are both freeware BTW.

Unfortunately, Registry Mechanic is one of those "bait the suckers" registry cleaning applications that tells users that there are hundreds (even 1000's) of errors and does not allow you to remove them without payment.

Additionally, the company which develops Registry Mechanic is crooked in my opinion. A few years back PC Tools initiated an "automatic renewal" process that is very deceptive. Without asking or giving any notification whatsoever, PC Tools renews their updates automatically, charging the users credit card for another year's subscription.

Many users do not realize prior to downloading that they not actually buying the software - they are leasing it. Once they get your credit card number they will automatically bill you every single year after that (to renew your subscription). Many users throughout the web also report that they received a notice after the fact; from PC Tools that exclaims that they have "automatically renewed your license."

The process involved in disabling this ambiguous automatic renewal requires a several step procedure involving a mandatory response to emails. If you do not follow these steps and follow up with the required e-mail, they charge you anyway and there is absolutely no refund made available once the credit card is charged for the update.

    Good Luck!
