    I know this is a stupid question, but I have an inspiron 1150 laptop that has a samsung CDRW/DVD SN-324FU203. With 2 different burning softwares I am unable to burn DVDs. When I hit burn,it tells me to put in a blank CD even though there already is one in the drive. It seems to recognize a disk when burning mp3's. I guess I just need my suspicion validated, but darn it I thought I got a DVD burner!

    Easy way to find out. Put a dvd movie in & see what gives. :)

    well, that won't tell him if its a dvd burner, only if its a dvd-rom.

    couple of ways to tell...first, go to http://support.dell.com/ put in your service tag, select Original System Configuration.

    second, in the device manager (Control Panel --> System), under DVD/CD-ROM drives, there may be a listing for a DVD-RW (at least there is on my system).

    third, you can download Everest and tool around in there...it should tell you what your drive is.

    toddler;
    try loading the software first and leave the drive empty some of the softwave appears to wait until it see's the tray open and close before it actually reads the disk (cd/dvd). In some cases it may even close the cd/dvd and prevent use, you end up with a cd/dvd that is empty and unable to re-use or write data to it.

    Use Nero InfoTool to find out exactly what media your drive will work with. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Nero_InfoTool_d120.html

    Thanks for your help guys,
    The Nero Info tools says the Samsung is a DVD burner. I tried to load the software before putting the empty disk in, but alas the problem persists! I get please insert blank dvd disk and the drive ejects the disc that's already in the drive. The 2 software programs I tried are Easy Creator 8 and AVI DIVX Mpeg to DVD converter Pro. Any suggestions? Thanks

    Did you check to see if the applications you are using are compatible with the drive you are using?

    P.S.: You may not have a DVD burning drive after all. I just checked my CD-ROM with Nero InfoTool and it has been mysteriously upgraded. See the attached screenshot below. I can assure you it is not capable of any action with a dvd.

    Hey Just Playin,
    I think you're right. After lenghty searching on the web I have what is called a "slimeline CDRW/DVD combo drive". Under the specs and recording capabilities it only mentions CDRW and CDRs, nothing about dvds. I found this info from a discount computer store link. Samsungs site was useless!! Who would have thunk ir would have been such a pain in the butt, but thanks to all for your help!

    Usually the description clues you in. If it was a DVD Burner, it would state (DVD+-R/RW/CD-RW/R).
