Is Special File Transfer Software Required?

I successfully established a Direct Crossover connection (using Ethernet & Cat5e crossover cable) for Windows ME to Windows XP Pro. Aside from purchasing file transfer software, can this be done without third party software. If possible, an example is appreciated. I'm guessing that using special software (SoftCopy by cellarstone.com) would make the task easier, but I'm not certain. Thanx --Erik

Thanks foogoo. After setting up DCC as described in my post, I needed to revert to a system restore point I had created prior to setting up DCC settings. I was unable to connect to sbcglobal with the DCC settings (No problem for me). As soon as I finish off what I'm working on, I will revert to the DCC restore point and try the "\\(computer name) command to see what I get. I'm supposing this command is put into the Windows Explorer address bar? P.S. Forget 'bout the refund -- I feel extra generous today! :) Thankx again --Erik :)

So what r you doing? unplugging from your dsl to connect to the other pc? then swapping back? Go out and get a hub or if you just want file transfers
get one of these cables @ http://www.lpt.com/ .. they have a usb cable for file & internet connection sharing too..
or for a cheaper version google BAFO USB file transfer cable - it does not share internet.

    You dont need any software.

You have connection established, each pc can see the other, simply click & drag.
XP also has "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" in system tools.
ME never used it, it may also have File Transfer Wizard, check system tools.

foogoo: I have a Linksys BESFR41, but I'm not using it. It took me half a day to figure out the command line. In my mind, I never connected the \\Computer\share to what I needed to actually use to make the contents of the source PC show up on my computer. Finally it hit me that I had to use \\Computer\C$. It sort of reminded me of the "Hit any key" analogy, when user calls help desk to ask where the "any key" is. :) Anyway, I managed to figure it out and the transfer was successfull. (Helping someone copying files to a CD. His CD/R is broken.)

ASUS: Once I got the command line figured out, I realized that I didn't need third party software to perform the task.

Thanx to you both for your input! --Erik
