Is there a forum like Major Geeks for consumer goods like electric shavers, etc.?

I googled "consumer electronics forum" and came up with several pages.

    I know there's a subforum on MyCE.

As I scanned thru the Google listing, I saw a lot of year-old-or-more dated 'last posts' and this seems to be more typical than not - slow death due to lack of participation.

Maybe there are too many objects-for-sale to try to lump into a single forum or sets of sub-forums.

Maybe the reliability of opinions becomes too questionable? I am thinking of NewEgg's ratings. I often see a host of Very Happy and Very Unhappy Ratings, but seldom do I see compliments or comments that match MY concerns or MY experience with any item. For example, "This $29 PC case is too flimsy, too crummy, too cheap." Sheesh - what'd ya expect for one of the cheapest PC cases?

"This $14 Samsung DVD drive isn't nearly as good as the $100 Plextor I used to have." Again - what's REALLY being rated here - the Product or the intelligence of the Reviewer? I KNOW what's truly being demonstrated by both kinds of comments.

Then again, when I see "2000 reviews" and 75% are great and 25% are bad, the numbers alone speak more than any individual review.

But you're not looking for one-direction reviews. One huge advantage of forums is the back-and-forth flow - someone pops off about a crummy product, someone else can jump in and say, "That's not my experience..."

Then, we consumers can evaluate the style, content and reasoned arguments. Ah, the joy of forums!

I suspect, however, the huge variety of product offerings PLUS the frequency of never finding The Exact Same Model (WalMart sells one model-number variant, Target and Best Buy each sell two other variants) are the retailers' attempts to force us to believe everything is Apples vs Oranges vs Nutjobs. "We match Internet prices" is a display of this - of course, what they're not printing is, "Of course, we'll never EVER carry exactly the same model so we won't EVER have to match prices because ours are better!"

  3. Thank you. What can you tell me about MyCE?

I believe forums remain an individually-constructed service. Put something in, get something out - "it all depends on you" is my viewpoint.

  5. Do you mean forums at MyCE or in general?

Concept, I think "forums" are in general a great endeavor for the individual to discover what they can get, what they can give and then to construct some emotional valuation.

For me, it's always interesting to read someone with one specific problem that, upon its solution, decide to continue to contribute. Sometimes they do it as a series of on-going searches for solutions but eventually, everyone seems to offer a pay-back or an attempt to help others.

Reviews on Amazon.com are also a good way to research a specific product.

Even if it has 4 or 5 stars, dig down and read the reviews plus the posted answers and questions. You can find out a lot about users' personal experience with the product.

I find that a good option too and do exactly what you do, in read the reviews, especially the low scoring ones and 9/10 times the bad vote from a buyer is down to them not researching a product well for their needs or not reading the damn instructions.

Most online stores even department stores tend to have ratings from buyers.

The idiots can ruin a products rating.
That's counterproductive and not helpful to anyone.

It's not but I think in many cases now people understand that not all that's written is honest feedback so will checkout a mixed set of reviews and from a few sites.

Reminds me I need to shave.
