    Hi

Sadly nothing is easy I'm afraid when using Yahoo webmail unless you have the paid account, Live Mail and Gmail are the better free email accounts, but try the below.....

You can use your Yahoo email address with the Windows Live Email Client, or try Thunderbird as its free too.

BUT note that to setup POP3 account with an email client application you may need a Yahoo Plus account which is a paid for account over the free email account. But you can try Ypops! to set the free email up with POP3 access. Thunderbird + Ypops instructions HERE

No it doesnt, I never had to create a Windows Hotmail/Live/MSN account to run Windows Live Mail at all, actually on one PC of mine I use it only with a Gmail POP3 account setup. Some guides may have hotmail accounts in the steps but you just substitute for your email service.

No mention of Messenger applications in my post, if you need an email client, I have given you two options but sadly Yahoo wants you in the main to buy their Plus account to be able to use POP3 which is email client based over webmail, Ypops is your best bet combined with Thunderbird for free POP3 access via an installed email client.

if your willing to use Outlook Express you can run it with YahooPOPs (yPops)and it will solve your issues. YahooPOPs acts as a go between for free Y! Mail accounts.
So you have SMTP/POP access to your free yahoo mail with out paying for it.

If you wanted to install Thunderbird, there is a plug in for various web mail sites.
    http://webmail.mozdev.org/

Then once you have a default mail client when you click mailto links your client will launch. (Ypops)

If you are using Firefox, install this add-on : Mailfrom it lets you pick System email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc) Yahoo, AOL, Gmail or Windows Live. You then just right click a link on a web page. The mailto:xxxxxxx.xxxx

Then for a email client on my machine I usePOP Peeper, Consider it a outlook or thunderbird lite, lite, lite. It lets you send, recieve and preview mail. Works good for me.

This might be a better choice than YPOPS. Some users who have tried to install YPOPS could not get it to work. I tried it just to see whether it would work but it did not work for me. Still, it's worth a try. If it works for you, then it is, indeed, a solution to your problem.

    1. Don't click the send email link.
    2. Hover over to see what the email address is for support/questions or whatever you want to email about.
    3. Open a new tab and go to your Yahoo email page and type the to address in that you discovered when you hovered over the link and compose the email.

The simplest way is if you are a Firefox user, in Firefox > Tools > Opyions > Applications, scroll down to "mailto" then choose Yahoo from the dropdown.

If you use Internet Explorer, it's more complex because of the way XP (and later) were built to use MS email programs. You'll need to download and install the Yahoo Toolbar, make sure you select "Install Yahoo mail plugin" option (if it still exists - I'm using Windows 7).

In Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, select Internet Options. Click Programs tab and select your email client (Yahoo) from the drop-down list. Once selected, click OK/Apply. If you don't see Yahoo listed, from Windows Explorer, > Tools > Options > File types and search for "mail" and "mapi", set all of these to be handled by IE.

Click myaddress@yahoo.com to test. If it still doesn't open IE and go to Yahoo mail's new mail page, try the registry patch on the 3rd line of the top answer here.

Thanks folks but I really wish there was an easier way to use IE (as everyone has it), I'd appreciate it if someone would try out the IE method, maybe it can be refined, depending on the Windows/IE version.

I remember long ago there was a small exe that let you change the default email system wide to yahoo, live, etc. I lost it in a reformat and couldn't find it again. I wish I could it was handy.

I just tested your method in IE8 in an XP SP3 VM and it worked straight off. Even if I then overrrode it and reset Outlook Express as default, just repeating the steps activated it again.

The OP should be pretty pleased with you I would think ;)

EDIT - now how do I do that for gmail?

Thanks for testing it and confirming :highfive

For Gmail/Hotmail, revisit Post 11, read the last link; there are several modified lines there to use in the Registry patch or via manual Registry editing after running the patch, one of them is for Gmail and another is for Hotmail. I don't know if that will be enough though.

It works if I'm in Chrome in Win 7 but not in IE8. I'll go on poking around.

mmm...I would have liked that to work for gmail but it doesn't seem to work at all in my Win 7, not even for Yahoo. The MAILTO protocol in Default Programs is still pointing at Thunderbird which I no longer use. :cry

Change it to your current default browser and change the mapi too. It'll get it closer ...
