Hi all, this is my 1st post since MajorGeeks was for the most part pretty informative and i didnt need to ask anything, but....

My problem does beyond simple cookie deletion.

Since i usualy use beckrexx expert backup to backup my settings, mails and all conected to internet, naturaly i save all cookies too. Having said that, you must imagine how much of that stuff piled up over few years.

    Now for the realy problem...

Im having arround of 4000 cookies on my computer right now. I had over 5000 but used program called ExpiredCookiesCleaner to delete expired ones. It helped some as you may see but also introduced some problems like index.dat missmatch (but thats another problem) and deleted some of cookies i wanted to save.

I know there are programs to delete cookies and to choose to save some of them and even to save cookies from specific websites but that is just not good enough for me.

I know i could use programs and delete cookies one by one leaving the ones i think i need but with 4000 cookies and my browsing and backup habbits... that will just take forever.

So, is there a program, or some other automatic manual way, to DELETE all cookies that do not have any important data like username and passwords in them but to leave cookies that do have similar data.

Practicaly and simply put, i whanna save cookies that i need for browsing and easy access to sites that need loging in in some way or the other and to just get rid of all other non esential ones.

I hope i have been clear on this now :)

Also, i would like to ask is there a program that repairs IE cache like CacheSentry do.

I await to hear your suggestions and i thank you in advance for any help you offer.

I forgot to mention that i use XP SP2 and IE 6 for browsing.

Also i was looking at IE7 and saw he have some clean up options for cookies to save relevant data and passwords and that is it separate from cookies. Is this what i look for or...

    Hi

Yes CCleaner will do this and you can also specify which cookies you would like to keep from deletion in the Options > Cookies menu

Ths also deletes the index.dat and its references, however to distinguish the cookies that store pass/user from the normal few that a site may add is difficult as many sites like this forum will use only one cookie for user/pass and general.

Personally I delete any site cookies that needs a user/pass as this allows auto loggin on for anyone, and keep a few that are not sites that need logons etc, but in general I delete nearly all of them.

Yes, I agree with Halo...if--like me--u don't deal w/cookies w/Windows, which is managing them correctly up front...*then* I too, find ccleaner an excellent app, and it is first thing I install after OS, as it is such a useful way of doing things: from removing garbage I don't need, to removing programs that have "snuck in" to getting garbage out of startup...

And I use it about once a week, and I can't think of any other way--w/all those cookies u have--to remove them without either removing the *all* (probably what I'd do) and starting over...or, selecting the few cookies I might actually *want* and keeping them--easy w/ccleaner--but u can always get the cookies again, that u need...me, I'd do a clean slate deal...

    Best wishes...

Thank you for your replys but as i stated, i have over 4.000 cookies in my computer right now.

Apart from that it will take ages to find what i want i also dont know what cookies i need so i am able to continue to browse normaly.

Im the only user of this computer and dont have any restriction or security issues that someone could steal something from computer.

My only interest is to delete cookies that i dont need quickly and painlesly while keeping the cookies that contain any information like passwords and similar things.

I know about CCleaner as it is one of most mentioned cleaning tool and i have been using it for a long time now. Oldest version that i saved is 1.88 but thats 1st one i saved on DVD i use for applications. Sadly, he dont exactly do what i need when i comes to cookies...

    So the question still remains,

Is there a program that can delete all cookies that do not have any passwords in then while keeping the ones that have that kind of info.

Also, while searching the web, i found out interesting post that was talking about cookies and how they have word "pass" inside them if they contain some passwords for websites. I have searched and it seams to be correct...

So my other question would be:

Are cookies that contain word "pass" inside them the ONLY ones with passwords or relevant information for accessing sites that require some kind of logging ?

Again thanks for all help you can give.

Off hand I dont know of one for the reason on passwords I'm mentioning below, and not found an application yet that searches for text thats inside a cookie.

I cannot recreate that as these days many websites use code to protect the user/pass info stored in a cookie, I have not found the word "pass" and I have double checked with 20 sites I log into and their respective cookies and the cookie data is a mix of account name (not always could be user or session/user ID) and the password is MD5'd into a jumble of coded alphanumerical text.

Sample of a partcial one of mine which is much much longer than this sample
    Code:
    59mail.google.com/mail16003665555328299703

Not always, the word pass may appear as a random set of text in a cookie.

I know what we mentioned is not the route you'd like to take, but personally I would delete all, then login to the sites you wish to keep which use passwords and then use CCleaner to save them from being deleted, this way once ones are saved, then all others not in this list will be deleted.

I have searched for an alternative solution and the few applications that where in my head where ones that would deal with searcing for and allowing viewing inside index.dat files. This one seems promising Karens Cookie Viewer but I have not tested it out yet.

Thank you for the help, i will check out that program you mention.

As for a number of cookies... well that goes back to the year of 2000 when i discovered BackRexx Expert program that tend to save various settings on your computer and restore them back if you ever install windows again. It also work on cross windows, menaning that i can backup things form win98 and implement them in windows XP...

So amongs many things, and being the "pack rat" that i am, i was saving and saving and saving many things including favorites, cookies, mails and similar things and most importand back then was dial-up settings.... and over the years.. it just got piled up....

So after cleaning a little more i came to this number:
    3277 File(s) 2.031.430 bytes
    0 Dir(s) 12.096.229.376 bytes free

    C:\Documents and Settings\Raka\Cookies>

Also i have 31 file that have word "pass" inside them like so:
    *mainpass_hashed6a.....and so on

I understand now that having pass in them doesent mean that they are only ones with passwords... damn i was kinda hoping that was the case....

The realy problem about all this is over they years i sign up to many sites and unfortunetly not with same username and password and sometimes not even similar one... so now i have a hard time tracking all this and saving cookies is the ONLY real way for me to have all passes i need...

Maybe i should request e-mail form that sites with username and password (i hope sice im loged in i dont need to give any aditional info) and just delete all cookies like many suggested....

In any case, if someone come up with some ingeniouse plan to delete crap cookies but to save important ones, please dont keep it to yourself.... and for the time beeing, i will keep my cookies.. :)

    Thanks to all

    Different strokes for different Folks.:-D

I just checked and I've got one cookie (yes, 1) and an Index.dat file in C:\Documents and Settings\Barry\Cookies but then I take the opposite tack and run various PC housekeeping programs, daily, to clean out the crap that accumulates every Internet session.

I don't mind logging onto a site if I have to.
Safer than keeping all that info in Cookies, IMO.

For the paranoid ones, check out Tips #18,19,29 and 21, go to "From today's MajorGeeks front page-Aug 2008" at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=165925 and you will find how to reduce Cookies to a minimum by running the 4 programs suggested.

Could save passwords for sites in an encrypted text file with website name and password. I don't save passwords. Ane also delete all cookies after an internet session. Also never allow third party cookies, although session cookies are let through. One less security issue to deal with. Have a set of passwords to use, and if all else fails try them all. I imagine the reason most forget their passwords is that they never use them, they let the OS/Program remember them. Cookies, me eat all the cookies :yum.

Rather than trying keep some cookies with password info and delete others, maybe try KeePass Password Safe 1.14 from http://majorgeeks.com/KeePass_Password_Safe_d5939.html
My note: Perfect Rating, so far. :cool

I know that this is not what the OP is trying to achieve but probably a lot less hassle maintaining, in the long run. All sorts of programs delete cookies and you would have to remember AND to setup each one to keep selected cookies or else as you set it up for one, the other/s deletes all your good work. :cry Bazza
