my school district uses a network system called echalk where the students can check their grades and attendance online and recieve emails under the echalk server from teachers and staff plus newsletters i would like a way to connect thunderbird to the server to recieve my email from it it would be very convenient for me because the url to remember for my school is very complicated (when working as fast as i like to)

You will need to know server specifics, like imap/pop addresses, for incoming and outgoing. The only way to know that, is if it's either advertised by the admins or you can ask for it. if it's supported. I'm guessing each school district that uses echalk has different mail server settings.
