Does anyone know if there is a way to send and receive text messages from the computer?

Due to reasons of privacy/anonymity, I want to be able to send someone a text message from my computer without using my real mobile phone number.

I'm not looking for a software or website that simply "masks" my phone number, but something that is entirely made-up/anonymous. It's basically like chatting with someone except that other person is receiving and sending from their phone, while I'd be sending and receiving from the computer.

    Any ideas? Thanks

I have to wonder why you'd want to chat with someone without them knowing who you are, but given what leaped to mind I really don't want to know. ;)

Some carriers allow texts by email or through their website, but it's not going to be anonymous. If you're that concerned about privacy, you'd be better off buying a prepaid phone and using that.

When I was with Sprint years ago, they had an app for that. But it's not anonymous. For that, you'd need a dating service which communicated by proxy for you, and the recipient would need a profile as well.

You can save yourself the wondering of endless possibilities.

All I'm looking for is if there's a way to chat with someone over the computer
to their phone (sending a text message to their mobile number and receiving it back on my computer instead of a phone). I don't mean like chatting with someone on facebook where they are on the mobile and i'm on the computer. I mean an actual text message to their phone and when they reply, it can come to me on the computer. Does such a thing exist or does everything require you to register a mobile number??

Most people these days are exclusively glued to their phones so they only chat and communicate via the phone. I don't want to have to give out my phone number to every person I'm going to communicate with for reasons I don't need to explain.

I've looked into quite a few programs but most of them require you to register your mobile number anyways. What they are offering is basically the same thing as phone to phone only you set it up on a computer which is NOT what I'm looking for. I don't want to register ANY phone numbers at all. I'm looking for something just like chatting PM to PM only they are doing it from their phone (via texting) and I'm doing it from my computer. Thanks.

I was going to suggest textem.net. I've used it. Recipients do not see your phone #; they will see username@textem.net [replace username with your actual username]. You can send messages without creating an account on textem.net but creating account provides some additional features such as Inbox and Contacts list. One catch, you do need to know the mobile carrier used by your intended recipient and select the carrier from a list on the site when preparing to send a message.

textem.net will send you an email notice when you've received a reply to a text message sent via them.

Not sure if Google Voice will do what you need.

What I normally do is send them an email. If you know the carrier of the recipient you can follow this scheme. Their phone number goes before the @

    AT&T: @text.att.net

    Sprint: @messaging.sprintpcs.com

    T-Mobile: @tmomail.net

Verizon: @vtext.com (or @vzwpix.com for photos and video)
