Is there an alternative to Youtube? Something more private?

Where could a friend post his recorded music files to (plays guitar)... but be able to set the website to Private, just for friends to view? He'd like to avoid Youtube if possible.

Most video-sharing sites are "public" or share your video with everyone you know. If you want only a few people watching your videos, you need a "private" video sharing service.

Videosprout - If you want to avoid setting permissions on each of your videos, you can sign up for an account with Videosprout. Its servers aren't publicly searchable, so each video you upload can be seen only by the people you allow. To allow someone to view your video, just send them a link. Although you can share your video with as many viewers as you like, there are limits. Your videos can be viewed only 500 times a month, and you have only 100 megabytes of storage space. That's only a few minutes of high-definition video, so this service is better for so-called standard-definition video.

Givit - Givit is another private sharing site like Videosprout, but it gives you 2 gigabytes of storage so you can upload larger videos. If you need more than 2GB of space. That's enough for several hours of standard-definition video. Increased storage plans start at $30 per year for 10 GB. Givit doesn't limit your monthly views, so the people you share your video with can watch as many times as they like. However, your friends and family or whoever you want to view your videos will have to sign up for a free Givit account in order to watch the videos.

Vimeo - While Vimeo uploads your video (or after it's done), click the Privacy tab. Then select only people with a password and enter a password. I'd also recommend disallowing embedding, and unchecking Download the video. And when you tell those you trust about your wonderful video, be sure to include the URL and the password. Here is a link to Vimeo FAQ.
