Is this hard drive SATA compatible?

I have this hard drive. It appears to have a very long port to connect to IDE, and then just beside it the smaller port that looks as if it could be connected via a SATA cable. Will this work? If not, what do I need to buy to connect this HD to my motherboard?

Sorry for the double post. I believe it is ATA/IDE and cannot be connected with a SATA cable, correct?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883113078 - This is my computer. There are pictures of the inside of the computer and specs there. Is it possible for me to connect an IDE device to this motherboard?

You're right Hyphen, the HDD you have listed is IDE and cannot be connected to a SATA port. From what I could see, you should be able to connect that HDD to your IDE on your MB. The IDE slot(s) are on the right side of the board and are placed vertically. I couldn't see an IDE slot because of the cable placement, but I'm sure you have at least one!;) According to that picture, you already have an SATA HDD, so do you just want to add this one as a 'back-up? It also looks like your DVD is also SATA, by the looks of the cables. Hope this helps!

Thank you. This does help a lot. Is this an IDE slot here?

If not, I can purchase one of these SATA-to-IDE adapters and connect the hard drive comfortably, right? All I need is a cable like this, right?

Hi again!! That is in the right area for an IDE connection, but it's really too dark to tell. I looked up you machine on the Gateway site and yes, you do have an IDE slot. However, that cable you linked to is NOT an SATA to IDE cable, it is just an IDE cable, the one you would need to connect that 2nd HDD to your MB. Get the cable and you'll be good to go;) Just remember that when you do hook it up, the cable itself will fit into the slot just one way. There's a notch on the slot which will coincide with the 'bump' on the cable itself. Good luck, and if you have more questions, com'on back!!

Okay thanks, last question I promise!

I do not believe I have any other IDE devices in this computer, so I'm not sure what I need to do with master/slave settings. I plan to install XP on the IDE hard drive and Vista on the SATA hard drive, and set the IDE hard drive to boot first in BIOS settings.

What do I need to do about master/slave settings and the jumper configuration? Can I just connect the hard drive to the motherboard with something like this, without a slave cable?

As for the master\slave settings. Just set the jumper to CS (cable select) and that should take of it since you plan on using it as your boot drive in the BIOS. As far as I know, you cannot slave a SATA drive to a IDE drive. You can connect your IDE HDD directly to the MB with the cable in your previous post. That should do you just fine. The cable you linked to in your last post is just a fancier IDE cable!! It's round so as to help with the flow of air in your machine, as opposed to the ribbon cable. And, granted, they do look better;) If you want, just PM me a mailing address and I'll send you a ribbon cable and a round cable (blue). Ever since I went all SATA, I have a ton of cables that I have no use for and you're welcome to them. Cost...NONE!! Providing you live in the USA. Again, if you have anymore questions, feel free to post again.

Really? Thanks for all the help, that'd be awesome. I can't send a PM yet since I don't have 50 posts, and posting an address right here could be a very stupid thing for me to do, heheh.

Yeah, I totally agree, posting an address would NOT be the most prudent thing to do;)

Do you have an email or anything you'd be willing to post here? I'm trying my best to resist spamming to 50 posts, and it's ridiculous that a $3 cable comes with $5 shipping on Newegg!
