Is this laptop any good?

Brand new at Circuit City for $649.99:

COMPAQ Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 2800+
DVD/CD-RW reads DVD's and reads/writes CD's
512 MB DDR-DRAM memory
60 GB UltraDMA hard drive
built in 802.11g wireless

My main concern is the processor (i never heard of it before). How good is this one, and if its bad, what processor should i be looking for in a laptop?

 

The AMD Sempron is a good processor. And yes it is a good laptop for the price and what you are getting.

 

what are you looking to do with the laptop?

 

well, its gonna be for college (mostly schoolwork). So storage is gonna be #1 priority.

Hell, I'll use it for what I use my home computer for: Schoolwork, storage of files, such as text, movies, and pictures (I toy around with photoshop and the GIMP every so often). I also have a ton of music and movies on my computer, so good video and sound cards are important, as well as a good screen.

Storage, music/video, homework. Thats about it. No games.

 

With a laptop, sound is another thing. You would have to purchase external speakers if you want good quality sound. As for the screen, you can purchase a external monitor, but it is only as good as the video processor.

There are laptops out there that are good desktop replacements, and others that are for doing work. The Compaq that you posted is good for the later, which it is intended to do.
